Rumors of a delay?

It is just being talked about. The WTU has a general assembly tomorrow at 5pm.

I was told by a union organizer that teachers will be striking this Monday. To protest the plan for going back in person.

Your source is wrong. Also “union organizer” isn’t a title WTU uses.

We cannot strike. It’s illegal. What’s supposedly planned is a sick out this Friday, Oct. 30. It was the subject of the WTU meeting this week. They want to take “strong collective action” if negotiations aren’t successful. I don’t know the exact number but a majority apparently voted in favor of the sick out. From hearsay it sounds like it could be more than one day if not effective.

Aren't sick outs a contract violation?

Not sure. Work stoppage is illegal, but we are entitled to take our sick leave so I’m not sure calling out sick would count.

Is this definitely happening? Does anyone know when we would be told about this sick out?

I haven’t heard anything beyond it being discussed. I’m guessing they will share more tomorrow:

“Join us on Thursday, October 29 at 5:00 PM for a Member Assembly. All members are encouraged to attend.

The WTU Leadership will provide an update on the next steps in our response to the DCPS Reopening Plan. We continue to work to ensure our schools prioritize the health and safety of our students and demand a plan that supports ALL students.

This meeting will be conducted as a WEBINAR, in order to accommodate the expected number of attendees.”

You can't force people to compromise the most important and essential parts of themselves and the people most important to them.

Unless those people are either 1) in the military; or 2) low wage workers with little education and no money, right?

That's just men, in time of need or people who WILLING go.

And we always screw over the poor, why is this surprising?

Um, I am female and did several years in the Air Force because I had no other viable option after my mom said she wanted me to leave the house. Surprisingly, young people from the south with zero family money or support do not have an abundance of options. You are an idiot if you think most people in the military at the enlisted levels are "willing" to be there in the true sense.

Others do something else. That is still a choice, no one forced you. You could have worked at a retailer. My own dad was kicked at right at 18, in highschool. He already had a job at walmart. Still managed to get a good job years later after college.

Grandfather came from a dirt poor family and joined the airforce because he too thought that would be the most viable, then when his time was up he had another job. He also actually fought in a war and he never complained. He's happy with life.

I don't really believe you had 'no options' That's was just the easiest one for you.
But carry on with this self pity.

I can’t figure out what she does. So very likely title is wrong. She sure seemed confident about the sick out though. I guess we will find out in a few days.

I know this is a tiny thing but can they not be sick on another day? Dressing up for Halloween at “school” on Friday is like the only thing my kid has to look forward to.

Source?

Has DCPS conceded? Are they not opening at all now or just delayed to finalize negotiations with WTU?

Sick out would be Monday not Friday

re sick out - all grades or just elementary?
Are permanent subs part of WTU?

My child is behind on assignments for the advisory and another day to work - without new work - would be really helpful.

[and I hope the teachers feel better soon]

No official knowledge, but teachers at my school we’re hearing and anticipating Friday.

I’m guessing it would be all grades? And permanent subs are not WTU, just subs.

I am guessing there will be a market for educators who can provide quality virtual instruction to families who are not interested in in-person school during covid!

Will be?

There has been for a while now.

It’s honestly the best path. My kids have a private teacher every day now, are done by noon, and are waaay ahead of DL curriculum.

Not negotiating with the union is a contract violation - hence the unfair labor practice

This makes me loathe the stupid parents supporting WTU even more. Do you still really think WTU has the kids' best interest at heart (looking at you PTA President who encourages parents to support WTU)?

There is no way this thing starts Nov 9. I have an at risk kid with a slot that apparently wasn’t real and dcps central planning won’t answer my emails. They are acting like they can just will this thing into existence. They are forcing a labor action that will be completely justified.
