Is Madewell stuff ugly?

Saw Madewell was highly recommended for curvier figures-- not plus sized per se but a small waist/big hips. I found a couple pair on ThredUp and the thrift store and they are great, but I never actually browsed their store or site until just now.

I'd say their clothes are boring at best. More of the same loose, drab stuff that's everywhere right now (apparently partly d/t supply chain issues, believe it or not). I was in a shopping district on a business trip last week and had wanted to hit their store, but now I see I'm not missing anything.

Just checked Everlane's site (also had been unfamiliar with them) and they look essentially the same. Blah.

Hm. J Crew same. Banana Republic only slightly more interesting.

I've been shopping mid range designers via consignment stores (which means a lot is not this season, either), so I don't know, but... is there any chain store that's doing anything interesting? I know they're chains, so things are almost necessarily watered down, but the clothes I just saw were so bland and uninspired they were almost invisible. I could swear I used to get some fun or at least CUTE things at Gap, etc., but I'm not seeing it now.

I've said it on this site before.... Madewell looks like you're an extra in the last scene in Dr. Zhivago where Alec Guinness tracks down Lara's daughter in a post WW2 soviet factory. They're looking better than they were during the Russian Revolution, and they've added some dye lots to the fabric, but it still looks like something made for the worker proletariat in bulk.

As a short person losing weight, I can’t wear Madewell. The boxy cuts don’t help me. I need stuff that skims and shows my curves.

It leads me to believe it’s made for skinny, slender people only.

I bought some cute Madewell earrings this spring!

This thread has served a purpose: I didn't see your previous post, and am so glad to have the opportunity to find it here. Spot on and erudite. Thank you for this -- you have redeemed my faith in DCUM.

I'm 50 and I love Madewell. The quality, the colors/fabrics feel to me like the Gap used to when I was a teenager. Also like JCrew, usually - though there can be some big misses.

Admittedly I am super plain and casual. An academic/mom.

I find it interesting people say the madewell quality is good. I find it absolutely among the worst of the worst of mall brands.

Yes, ugly. I like their jeans, though.

I agree it's more for skinny people.

I think it's the madewell models that make their clothes so fugly. They purposefully try to make it look awful.

2024 and Madewell definitely has the UGLIER styles ,and clothes for men.

34 year old here and I must say it's become a waste of time to even walk into their stores(Made well) as everything look like it's from the 60s. The fit is horrible, the color scheme and same boxy shirts to the now “1991” jeans is just terrible. Crew is almost on the same boat.

It's just a matter of time before this store goes belly up.
