I accept that I am getting old and out of touch, but am I THAT out of touch that I no longer recognize fashion? Am I wrong or is Madewell full of aggressively ugly clothes?

We sound similar and I admit to wearing a decent amount of Madewell (and still, J. crew). Maybe I am clinging to the delusion that it is a slightly more fashionable alternative than LOFT or Target? My playground contemporaries seem to favor the "rose all day" type slogan tees and what I consider an Instagram mom aesthetic, which doesn't really appeal to me. I like my Vejas, high-waisted jeans, and bold framed glasses. Where do the casual 40 year olds who aren't ready for Chicos go?

Madewell and Everlane! Why fight a good thing?

+1. And formerly, Banana, but I’ve been kind of disappointed with them lately.

Interesting. I like BR but have no interest in Madewell or Everlane. That stuff looks like Hanes or Fruit of the Loom tees and sweats to me.

Madewell makes my favorite cotton t-shirt (the whisper cotton v-neck -- I have it in like 12 colors) and I like their denim, which I don't find homely at all. Their high waist denim is really slimming and they have great rinses. Otherwise I find them a little blah. But it's wonderful to find a brand you can reliably turn to for certain staples.

I have never liked Madewell but do like Uniqlo which is even more plain/basic than Madewell. I’m 40 and 5’8”.

Maybe it's because I'm just slightly younger (37) but honestly I'm kind of loving that my casual clothes are like something I would have worn in high school. But I'm not seeing a lot of people on a regular basis so I might feel different when the pandemic is over.

I’m a creative and ordered some clothing after someone here raved about it. The shirts were cheaply made. One looked like a tablecloth. I think I donated them to charity.

Madewell denim is great, but I’ve not had luck with anything else holding up.

Chiming in to say I love Madewell. I also have their vintage (crewneck) tee in multiple and same colors. I exclusively wear their denim.

I am in my very late 30s. Just checked out & other stories based on the recommendations here. It's the grown up version of the dELIA's catalogue I used to get in JHS and HS. Not for me.

Madewell is the Chico's of the thirty-ish year old set. Frumptacular.

Madewell is not made well so I don't care for it.

I generally like Madewell, particularly the denim, t-shirts, and button downs. Everlane, on the other hand = UGLY! (I'm 40, FWIW.)

I see this is a zombie thread, but I'll put in my 2c. I was out of the fashion/shopping loop for a few years until I needed a whole bunch of new clothes recently. Saw Madewell was highly recommended for curvier figures-- not plus sized per se but a small waist/big hips. I found a couple pair on ThredUp and the thrift store and they are great, but I never actually browsed their store or site until just now.

I'd say their clothes are boring at best. More of the same loose, drab stuff that's everywhere right now (apparently partly d/t supply chain issues, believe it or not). I was in a shopping district on a business trip last week and had wanted to hit their store, but now I see I'm not missing anything.

Just checked Everlane's site (also had been unfamiliar with them) and they look essentially the same. Blah.
