I feel like I am in the exact Madewell demographic: 40, in a creative field, casual dresser. I feel like I should like their stuff but everything looks very ugly to me. I accept that I am getting old and out of touch, but am I THAT out of touch that I no longer recognize fashion? Am I wrong or is Madewell full of aggressively ugly clothes? |
I would say plain, which seems to be the style now. |
I agree OP. Everlane too. The current boxy styles are fugly. |
Agreed. Plain / frumpy, not ugly. |
I thought madewell was geared toward 20s and like screw but cheaper. |
Is 40 their demographic? I think it skews way younger. Dresses are really short. Lots of stuff that would look cute in your 20s but schlubby and unkempt later in. |

I love Madewell

Madewell says their clothes are made for 20 and 30- somethings. 20 somethings, I get. My 17 year-old likes some of their stuff. In your 40s, j crew is more in your demographic. Whatever. Wear what you like. Your business.

I like their jeans and some of their t shirts. Bought a couple of the Northside vintage T-shirts’ this summer and love them. But yeah, some of the other stuff is boxy, way too short, or meant for really tall people. |
I'm the 47 year old writer - I like both. Madewell makes sturdy basics that I really like. I live in their shorts (the Emmett shorts are perfect), I have several sun hats, I'm wearing a Madewell sweatshirt right now. It's all-cotton stuff that looks a touch more stylish (I think) and I don't have to worry about ruining. I wear a lot of J Crew, too, but I find the quality to be more hit or miss, and I think a lot of the styles are a little fussier, too. |
I feel like Madewell took up the norm-core banner a while ago and never let up. So yeah, everything is a little plain & boxy. I think this can look relaxed and louche on a 20 year old, but is harder for me (45) to pull off, though I like some of their stuff. |
Love their jeans. I always get them. When I’m there, I notice their bags. One day I’d like to get one. As for their clothes, they don’t appeal to me...everything always has this brown/beige/marooon/navy look. |
Sounds like you’re secure in your fashion sense. Why even start the post? Not being bitchy- honestly wondering. |
It's not my post. I'm just another middle aged creative who likes Madewell. I was trying to reassure OP that she's not alone. |
