Yes but they are here and not leaving and eventually it will be a huge societal problem if they are uneducated at least to the bare minimum |
I’m confused: on whom? The children? |
On the other hand, the prison industry is stoked. |
| All this in a city that has some of the lowest coronavirus numbers in the country |
This is us. We went private at the last minute and I know our paperwork has not been processed. I have two children who previously attended at WOTP elementary. We hope to return next fall. |

Does it matter? A smaller school system would be easier to manage, good riddance.
We already have a shortage of space and teachers. |
| What? |
If there are fewer kids, it will be because many of their families are leaving the city -- shrinking our local tax base and the funding available for education. It's also likely that those left behind will require more resources. I frankly don't believe that there are 20,000 kids missing but I do believe there are thousands of families who had trouble navigating the enrollment process. I'm at a Title 1 school that is overenrolled and has a waiting list. The school staff walked families through registration and offered to do masked home visits if needed. |
The plural of anecdote isn’t data, but our family moved out of DCPS to MCPS over the summer because I have zero expectation that Bowser or OSSE will put the interests of the kids first, or handle either DL or reopening with even a modicum of competency. Obviously we feel guilty as Hell about being the rats to jump ship. So that’s one out of 20,000 accounted for. |
Don't sweat it, we're good without you. But congrats on your overinflated sense in thinking that your moving should make you feel guilty about abandoning poor DC. |
Yea...do you really think that will put a dent in anything? DC has an large amount of wealthy people living here, I don’t worry about funding. I worry about how it’s allocated and being used. We have one of the highest per pupil spending in the country. I also work at an over crowded title one school, so crowded we had to turn a closet into a resource room... DC should spend money on making sure every school has a great environment and excellent teacher training. And instead of just giving poorer families a place to live, require them by law to learn about how to manage money, and some free schooling towards a job they’d like to do. The problem with DCPS isn’t how much we spend on students it’s the fact that we don’t want to look at their home environment even though we know some of them are really bad and sometimes it’s not at the fault of parents. |
Just remember that mindset every time someone complains that their EOTP school would be better if not for all the charter schools. |
I understand the vitriol. I hope you can continue to make things work for your family. |
No charters are different, they are literally stealing money. They should just be private and have parents pay, the idea that people have to pay taxes for a private ‘public’ school is insane. |
