One out every five kids in DC has never attended school this year.

This is unconscionable.

The cure is worse than the disease. Open the schools.

What makes you jump to that conclusion?

DCPS record-keeping is crud. People have been getting notices that their kids are truant from schools they never registered to attend. I know lots of people who have withdrawn their kids from DCPS this year and DCPS still has them on the books, even with withdrawal papers filed.

Headline is a little misleading. Last year, they had 89k enrolled by this point. This year they have 77k. So, the difference is closer to 12k.

If this board is any indication, these kids are out of school; they just moved to the suburbs/went private/are being home schooled.

I thought it was interesting that they said the under enrollment does not significantly vary by ward.

Yep. Doubt it’s kids who have gone private so might even shift some schools out of the title 1 classification

Ha. Everything is fine! I’m sure their paperwork is around here somewhere! I’m sure the secretary just misplaced it!

You are part of the problem.

They made the process way too complex and with too many steps. Some parents just gave up.

This board is not any indication other than some upper middle class kids at HRCS, WTOP DCPS and a few Capitol Hill schools and some crunchy Brookland and Petworth types trying to get a few more years out of their home valuation. There's a lot more city than our little white worlds.

+1

As if, I’m the middle of a recession, a bunch of parents just found an extra $40,000 to send their kid to private school. These are not rich kids who are missing.
