This is exactly it. Once all those kids are on campus, they will have the same result. Too funny that the PP actually thinks the “character” of the students will somehow be different. |
I stand by that comment. We shall see. |
I don't believe the character of the students is significantly different between UVA and JMU. I believe JMU seems to have made some surprising errors in terms of planning. To not require a negative test from students before they arrive is ludicrous. It also seems (based on the images from that class with the kids sitting on the floor) that JMU also did a poor job of planning the classes. You can't just pull out the desks. You have to reduce the number of people enrolled in that class. As for "once those kids are on campus, they will have the same result"... that doesn't seem to be the case. Almost all of the outbreaks at colleges have been tied to off campus gatherings. If they don't require a negative test of those students, and they aren't serious about enforcement, THAT will be the issue. Not the kids on campus. UVA has required testing, and they do seem to be serious about enforcement, even off campus. Again, I'm not trying to bash JMU. I was impressed by the school when we did campus visit and folks who are alum seem to love it, so it's really unfortunate that they seem to be an outlier compared to some of the other VA state schools. We take DS to Charlottesville tomorrow. I hope all goes well for him and everyone in the community. |
Good luck to your son. We got my freshman on campus at a SLAC. It was really hard to suck it up and drop him off. Scary. Sad. But, I’m finally starting to breath again. He seems really happy and the kids are all picnicking on the lawns for meals and exploring the town in small groups with masks. He’s made friends and hasn’t felt isolated (except the first 48 hours when he was waiting for his first on campus COVID fest to clear, and had to stay in his room, except to use the restroom, meals delivered. His first week of classes went well. 6 positive COVID cases on entrance testing, sent directly to a hotel. 0 cases the first week of surveillance testing. That won’t hold, but I’m hopeful they can keep it contained. It isn’t “normal” college. But, the kids are making it work. I hope it works well for your kid all the UVA kids heading back as well. It definitely can. The big X factor is whether the kids are compliant with health rules. I think UVA was smart to wait. It gave the kids have seen what has happened at places like JMU and UNC, so they know that if they want to stay, they have to mask up and social distance. I bet a lot of JMU and UNC students would have behaved differently if they had understood what could happen. |
Kids have to understand that things can't go back to the way they were in Fall 2019 or how they thought college would be when they are growing up. If they don't follow fairly rigid guidelines, they are going to have even the new limited Covid college experience taken away from them. |

Re: dorm dwellers
I apologize if this has been asked already but what about R&B refunds at JMU? How is UVA going to handle R&B refunds if they have to send everyone home too? |
UNC sent students home over two weeks ago. JMU students had the advantage of seeing that and making sure they didn't end up with the same fate. |
We've had 6 months of this. How could they not know what would happen? |
Because the are legally adults but have teenagers brains. |
I work at JMU. Of course some students were irresponsible, but this is NOT THEIR FAULT. There was so much poor planning. The dorms were at full capacity (doubles, triples and hallways sharing bathrooms). There are limited dining options here, and limited times, which meant many students all had to go to the same places at the same times to eat. We had so many sick students or students needing quarantine, they ran out of space. A week before students returned, you could get an appointment for a Covid test the same day you called for one. By the end of last week, there was a 3 day wait at CVS and people getting turned away on campus. In addition, the health center was completely overwhelmed - they were supposed to be doing contact tracing but they were swamped. I hope UVA has learned from mistakes at JMU. |

UVA hasn’t learned.
What I find interesting about this whole pandemic is that everyone thinks they can be the exception- until they aren’t. |
VT seems to be trending in the wrong direction, infections and positive rates are up, and they are nearing 50% of their isolation space occupied. UVA has had 161 student cases excluding pre-arrival testing, but still has only 5% of isolation space used. W&M has had no positives other than pre-arrival testing and no isolation space used yet. The big test will be the next few weeks. |
You are ridiculous. Yes, we shall see.

I just find it astounding that you aren’t aware kids at UVA are indeed partying off campus, and have been for weeks. A friend of mine took her daughter to see UVA last week and she put pictures on FB of UVA students partying at restaurants and bars. You are sadly mistaken if you think UVA kids are somehow taking this more seriously than students at other colleges.

+100 This, exactly. Everyone is so smug - until they find themselves in the same boat. |
