Good luck to your son. We got my freshman on campus at a SLAC. It was really hard to suck it up and drop him off. Scary. Sad. But, I’m finally starting to breath again. He seems really happy and the kids are all picnicking on the lawns for meals and exploring the town in small groups with masks. He’s made friends and hasn’t felt isolated (except the first 48 hours when he was waiting for his first on campus COVID fest to clear, and had to stay in his room, except to use the restroom, meals delivered. His first week of classes went well. 6 positive COVID cases on entrance testing, sent directly to a hotel. 0 cases the first week of surveillance testing. That won’t hold, but I’m hopeful they can keep it contained. It isn’t “normal” college. But, the kids are making it work. I hope it works well for your kid all the UVA kids heading back as well. It definitely can. The big X factor is whether the kids are compliant with health rules. I think UVA was smart to wait. It gave the kids have seen what has happened at places like JMU and UNC, so they know that if they want to stay, they have to mask up and social distance. I bet a lot of JMU and UNC students would have behaved differently if they had understood what could happen.
UNC sent students home over two weeks ago. JMU students had the advantage of seeing that and making sure they didn't end up with the same fate.
We've had 6 months of this. How could they not know what would happen?
Because the are legally adults but have teenagers brains.
