Weird food shortages

It seems to vary store to store and week to week. My Safeway (SW DC) has tons of dried beans--including sales on some of them (59 cents for a lb of lentils) and tofu and other stuff on this list, but was totally out of dish and dishwasher soap last week and had no coconut milk.

Caffeine-free Diet Coke is very hard to find.

We eat less pasta in the summer and I still have a few boxes left from when the pasta shelves were almost cleared out. Now there’s a sauce shortage? I don’t think I have any.

Various pork products seem to be an issue, I would guess because of the problems at the meat packing facilities.

Yeah you can find it but it’s so damn expensive.

No bacon for us

Not a food item but I get them from the grocery store -- can't find the Hefty pine scented stretchy kitchen bags anywhere. 30 gallon.

Finally found it at Balducci’s (probably overpriced but I bought it).

Supposedly now there is a cloth shortage.

Bull....

Actually, there is. The cloth they use to make them is going for PPE. https://slate.com/business/2020/07/why-its-still-so-tough-to-find-disinfectant-wipes.html

A local fruit orchard staff member told me that they were having a hard time, between the weird weather and the ability to.find fruit pickers at this point.

I m really craving spaghetti, and it's hard to find the sauce!

But it IS August and they are still had to find

Tomatoes are a great shelf stable item so they go bought rout and season is just in full swing right now and it's a very labor intensive picking process with mostly visa farm workers which there are fewer of right now given closer border and covid.

This actually isn't true about tomatoes being labor intensive. Google "tomato harvester." delicate fruits do often require hand picking, though. -- DCUM's resident farmer

I've had a hard time consistently finding decaf ground coffee. Plenty of regular, but no decaf on the shelves many times when I do my shopping.

Refried beans! They were sold out when we visited Rehoboth Beach a few weeks ago, and the Giant here in Burke is completely out of stock (with a sign even stating "Out of Stock"). It's so weird and I can't figure out why?
