Has your HS senior committed to a university yet?

I think probably the PP meant they'd save on room and board, if the dorms are closed?

LOL honestly my kid would probably get great grades freshman year if he's at home under quarantine and has nothing to do but schoolwork....

Trying to decide between GWU and UMD for computer science. The cost is about the same since OOS and good merit scholarship at GWU.

GWU guarantees cost of tuition for his undergraduate degree but it looks like UMD does not and am worried with Covid 19 state budgets may cause increase in tuition especially for OOS. If UMD raised cost significantly would end up being a problem.

Also live on green line, how is the commute to UMD from Waterfront? We know what commute is like to GWU.

Any thoughts?

No. She's very torn between Northeastern Honors with a merit scholarship and Cornell. Though different, she loves both about equally. Fortunately, we did visit both before the crisis but she's still struggling with the decision.

My DD got into Amherst and Wake. Still trying to decide here.

Jeez is that even a close decision? My daughter went to Wake but would have chosen Amherst in a heartbeat!

I think DS is about to pick UMD honors over Haverford and Tufts. Thought he wanted a slac but over senior year has become more enthusiastic about UMD. Admitted students day in March really pulled UMD honors to the top of the pile for him. We were not pushing him in any direction but must admit I will be relieved to have him close by given the current public health situation.
Good luck to your kids as they make their final decisions

Grab Amherst. Not just the name. My sister went there many years ago, and got so much more than a great education. I visited her there for a week or so, and was so impressed by the sense of community, and many events. She still has so many very close friends from college, who’ve had impressive, fulfilling careers.

Why would she pick WF over Amherst? This is an honest question - DC goes to Amherst and struggled with picking it over Duke, but WF was never even in the picture.

Good to see some Northeastern love. This was the one school my son fell in love with on his visits. Downtown Boston, Co-ops, nice campus...still need to pull the trigger, though, lol.

It was really his best option for what he wants to study and it is something we can afford, with his scholarship.
He is aware that many students from his school also will be attending. There's nothing to be done about that, though.
It's a good school with a good program, and he won't need to take out any loans to attend, or work more than a few hours a week unless he develops an expensive hobby or something.
I also like that we won't have to worry about flying him home in the fall if he starts out at school and then needs to come back home.
If distance learning is still in effect next fall though... I think we will probably just have him live at home and save on the dorm fees freshman year.

My DD is also doing comp sci at UMD -excellent program/excellent price. Now lets just hope they get to go!

Same here, except for physics rather than comp sci. He left UMD last for the visits, and didn't go until after he was already admitted. I'm thankful that he did three visits (one general, one major-specific, and one shadow day for an Honors College junior majoring in physics) before COVID, because he really liked it. We were planning on going to UIUC and Madison over spring break, his other top choices for quantum physics, but obviously the virus interfered. He's much more of a homebody than my other kid, and not being able to visit those sealed the deal.

Funny, my DS is deciding between UMD, UIUC, and Madison too. For CS. Only visited UMD and had planned on the others during spring break.

If your DS is picking a school where he wants the best combination of academics and the nicest campus/city then Wisconsin is the best choice. Madison is an amazing place for a college student. But if the campus/city experience is not top priority them all three schools would deliver a top notch experience for academics in CS. On a visit Madison would shine compared to the other two. Congratulations to your DS. All three are great for CS! Just stay healthy, get a degree in CS and your DS will be in good shape.

I know the deadline is May 1. Will it make any difference if you pay deposit before May 1? Will you have more housing options? Any other advantages?

DD is trying to decide if northeastern will be her destination. She got in to NU in, and I can't get passed the fact that the college in London charges $12,000 in tuition plus flights and room and board, but going through NU, it will cost $35,000.

NU in seems to be $15,000 overpriced.

I'd go Cornell, all other things being equal. I think Northeastern is a great school, but unless there's something she can do there that she can't do at Cornell, Cornell will always have the stronger name recognition.

What were your Dd's stats for a merit scholarship at Northeastern?
