Has your HS senior committed to a university yet?

Still deciding between Ohio State, Sycracuse and Northeastern.

Wants to work in the sports industry. All schools are VERY different from each other.

$10k merit from Sycracuse. $0 merit from the others.

My son committed to UMD College Park for Computer Science major.
It was really his best option for what he wants to study and it is something we can afford, with his scholarship.
He is aware that many students from his school also will be attending. There's nothing to be done about that, though.
It's a good school with a good program, and he won't need to take out any loans to attend, or work more than a few hours a week unless he develops an expensive hobby or something.
I also like that we won't have to worry about flying him home in the fall if he starts out at school and then needs to come back home.
If distance learning is still in effect next fall though... I think we will probably just have him live at home and save on the dorm fees freshman year.

Yes, she was accepted ED1 to W&M so she has known where she is going since December.

My DD hit into Northeastern but without merit. Do you mind sharing your kid's stats and what merit aid was offered at NEU?

$20,000/year merit 35 ACT 3.7 UW/4.5 W. Lots of activities.

Great job! I think your kid will love Northeastern. Hopefully, school will not be on-line in Fall after all the hard work your kid put in plus the opportunity to go to a dream school. I feel so sad for these kids....

My DS also deciding on UMD for CS. All the reasons you list are what points us to UMD.

What's the issue? I went to a big state school, and very rarely ran into high school folks. To the point when I did, it was always a fun moment.

I think the comment was, "It's high school 2.0". A lot of kids seem to feel it isn't really going away to a new college. Half his high school class will be attending.

Same here, except for physics rather than comp sci. He left UMD last for the visits, and didn't go until after he was already admitted. I'm thankful that he did three visits (one general, one major-specific, and one shadow day for an Honors College junior majoring in physics) before COVID, because he really liked it. We were planning on going to UIUC and Madison over spring break, his other top choices for quantum physics, but obviously the virus interfered. He's much more of a homebody than my other kid, and not being able to visit those sealed the deal.

Really shy kid will try to hang with ZhS friends and don’t branch out. UMCP is not for the shrinking violet.

He will not understand how different the workload is, has ADHD on top of it - just won't work. Not sure he'll even want to try it if things are still going as projected.

DD is currently at her college apartment and is miserable and depressed and struggling sitting in front of a computer for 9 hours a day watching videos and taking notes for her STEM classes. Missing 3 labs a week as well - it's not feasible or worth the $$$ for college kids in STEM to be taking online classes....not sure what the future holds for our kids.

If it makes your daughter feel any better, my son had a large, in person lecture for Gen Chem 2. He had to race across the campus to get to class on time and always got a lousy seat with an equally lousy view of the notes that the professor was writing. In many ways, I think that class would have been MUCH better online for him.

The lab can not be done online. I guess they'll offer a classroom lab to your daughter separately at some point.

Funny, my DS is deciding between UMD, UIUC, and Madison too. For CS. Only visited UMD and had planned on the others during spring break.

Everyone I know who has kids there say they almost never see HS friends unless they are in the same major or dorm.

My UMD-attending child didn’t want to hang out with high school people in college, so he didn’t. If your kid otherwise is interested in UMD, not going there just due to high school classmates is dumb.

school. Penn was #1, but didn't get in.

I was a bit concerned about COVID-19, but figure that NY will handle it well, or Fall will be online. (They already called Summer sessions.) That could work out well, since we would save tuition and he would be taking the gen ed core classes the first semester, anyway.

Curious: what evidence is there that NYU or any other 4-year residential college is planning to reduce tuition if the fall semester needs to be conducted online?

I haven’t heard of any colleges discounting tuition for spring semester being online, so I doubt they would discount tuition for fall. The salaries of professors and staff still need to be paid.
