My knees are shot -- but not til i turned 58 last year. So no more running for me, which i have been doing since college. Don't want to gain any weight -- what will be as effective as running?

I do a combination of running on the treadmill and fast walking with an incline. I’ve found that the fast walk with the addition of the incline keeps me in my target heart rate and burns the same amount of calories as my running pace. I’m also in my 50s and am trying to be kind to my knees so I’m running less and less.

I have added Deep Water Running to my exercise program. Boring as all hell but is a good alternative workout to running. I do that, some running on a treadmill, some full incline walking, elliptical and recumbent bike. I figure now that I am well into my 40's and a bit injury prone, the more I change things up, the longer I will be able to exercise and hopefully stay injury free. Diet wise I make a lot of soup and keep it in the fridge. Exercise (especially in the pool) makes me hungry, so I need to have something good and healthy fast or the fridge floodgate opens!

NP here.

No lentils, peas, beans, no rice. Just chicken broth, water, spinach, dancing, swimming, and pursuing a hobby. Love and feel loved. Breath fresh air every morning.

That's practically my entire diet!

I do not have any extra belly fat, so we really are all soooo different. I'm 52.

But this is the best advice I've ever seen on DCUM.

The best advice is that your diet can consist of chicken broth and spinach? Oh wait I left out air and love. What a crock.

Do pop sugar fitness arms and abs. There is 1 with 3 women, one in a camo leggings. It is 20 mins. With weights. Do it everyday for 3 months. You will not have a tummy anymore.

Add some skinny pasta to your chicken broth and spinach and you will actually be full! Don't knock it 'til you try it.

One thing to consider with water exercise is that it doesn’t provide good weight bearing exercise that women need when they start reaching a certain age to maintain their bone mass.

Sorry hon. It’s those GD genetics! I’m 57yrs old with 25” waist and great abs, but nasty thighs with cellulite my whole life! I exercise like a beast but my thighs will always be yucky. I have gfs with awesome legs wearing short shorts but big bellies who envy my abs. We all exercise like crazy but there are very few people that don’t have problem areas. If I had great legs too I think I’d be jumped in the parking lot weekly.

YES! Rice converts to sugar. So cutting rice has a similar effect to cutting sugar.

Losing belly fat is only about losing weight. It is usually the last thing to go. More difficult than other fat. A severe diet is the only answer.

I could have written this! I am strign after the pool. I bring peanut butter on celery to eat after the loker room. Or I will eat fast food on the way home i am starving.

I was a swimmer and in great shape til my early 40s, but then I had kids and got too busy. Swimming takes so so so much time. Do you need special equipment for deep water running? I see the MoClo pools have DWR times but not sure if I need equipment? At least I won't have to wash my hair afterward

How do you explain Chinese people? Not many with large bellies around.

People who run that much or more do not have bellies, period. No need to eat restrictively by eliminating entire food groups or by squeezing all your meals into a few hours a day

Stand at the finish line of a marathon sometime.

Agree, there are a lot of apple shaped runners.

I keep hearing this silly advice on DCUM that 15 miles per week is a magic number. That is pretty low mileage- 3× 5 mile runs per week or 5x 3 mile runs per week. Jogging for a half an hour per day at a slow pace is not, by any stretch, the sort of vigorous training that would eliminate the need to diet.

Running is a good activity that I love and engage in often, but it is far from the panacea DCUM thinks it is, and weight lifting is better for body shaping and fat burn. Also, as a pp mentioned about the finish line of a marathon... it's true. Lots of marathoners are in good shape but many aren't. Marathons generally have more to do with your ability to tolerate and endure pain than your fitness level.

+1. I can have six pack abs and great legs but my arms love to hoard fat. Muscle underneath but you wouldn't know unless you touch my arms. Runs in the family.

Losing fat is diet. Period.

Punch your parents in the face . It’s the gene pool. I got the washboard abs from my dad and the cellulite legs from my mom.
