^^ My knees are shot -- but not til i turned 58 last year. So no more running for me, which i have been doing since college. Don't want to gain any weight -- what will be as effective as running?
I do a combination of running on the treadmill and fast walking with an incline. I’ve found that the fast walk with the addition of the incline keeps me in my target heart rate and burns the same amount of calories as my running pace. I’m also in my 50s and am trying to be kind to my knees so I’m running less and less.
I have added Deep Water Running to my exercise program. Boring as all hell but is a good alternative workout to running. I do that, some running on a treadmill, some full incline walking, elliptical and recumbent bike. I figure now that I am well into my 40's and a bit injury prone, the more I change things up, the longer I will be able to exercise and hopefully stay injury free. Diet wise I make a lot of soup and keep it in the fridge. Exercise (especially in the pool) makes me hungry, so I need to have something good and healthy fast or the fridge floodgate opens!
One thing to consider with water exercise is that it doesn’t provide good weight bearing exercise that women need when they start reaching a certain age to maintain their bone mass.
