OP, the name Emily comes from Maximilian. Do you like any names like Maxine or Maxi?

Hey, Mom of a Sophie here, and just because there are plenty of them to go around doesn't make it any less beautiful. Others must agree, hence its popularity.

Sophie is a family name and pretty much the only one my DH and I could agree on. Around here, it is very regionally popular, but in other areas of the country (where we are from) it is not. We love it, and sometimes it is worth it to have a popular name if it is your favorite name. Why settle for something you like less just to be different?

No, but it does make it incredibly annoying to both the child and other parents. My daughter's kindergarten class has Sophie P., Sophie M., AND Sophie Mc. You try figuring out who she plays with on a daily basis

Why not ask the teacher who your daughter "Rapunzel" plays with? If you ever have another Rapunzel in your class, will you change schools?

I love Amelia, DH did not. Julia was also one of my favorites and was on our short list; but we had a boy If you really like the name you should go with it, I don't think it is too common, I only know one she is about 6.

What about Sabrina. My cousin in a different part of the country picked that name. He had two requirements of his wife - not in the top 100 names of the social security and can basically be spelled one way.

Please avoid Emma/Emme. It is everywhere. I could not believe it when a friend recently named her DD that because it is so incredibly common. Ava is like the new Madison/McKenzie--stay far away. Generally, once a celebrity uses it, it is over, and multiple celebrities have used Ava.

Check the social security web site for lists of the most common baby names. You can avoid the most common and go back to say, the 1920s for a less used name.

How about Rose?

Anonymous wrote:Neither of their names were Ava, but the meaning is what connects the name to my grandparents. I'm using the interpretation that Ava is a derivative of Eve, which means life. I've been searching for another girl's name with the same meaning but so far Ava is the only one we really like. It's important to us that the name is meaningful (to us) and I think I'd be okay knowing she'd likely be among other Ava's in her daycare, preschool, etc - but then again, knowing how trendy the name is today does kind of bother me!

Why use a derivative? I think Eve is a really pretty name.
