What do you know? There was a Roman Emperor Jovian. His name comes from Jovian, the adjective form of Jupiter or Jove. It has the same relationship as Julian does to Julius.

This is a hot new trend. If you really want to be cutting edge, name your baby girl after an obscure Roman Emperor. And yes, it is the adjective form of Jupiter - it usually refers to the planets Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus & Neptune. The Jovian Planets are also known as the "Gas Giants."

Either way, a lovely name for a little girl!

This is a bunch of great suggestions. I love Corinne, Clara, Elise, Elsa, and Sonia.

Love Julia - that was going to be ours if we had had a girl (we didn't). Emma is lovely, but popular. I like Amy - which is a classic (think Little Women) - in fact, I like all the Little Women names - Josephine. Meg, Amy and Beth. I also like Lucy and Hannah. I wanted Grace - but my husband veto'd the alliterative aspects with our last name - and then we had boys anyway.

I love the name Ava, it's so classic and it also honors my dad's dad and my mom's mom - something that's really important to me. But it is sooo common! Should I just ignore that and use it anyway?

I wouldn't. Other than Sophie it's probably the most overused girl's name in the area. Very, very trite.

I disagree. It sounds like it's meaningful to you and you love it. I would use it, with the knowledge that she might not be the only one with that name in her class.

I also disagree that the name is "trite."

(and FWIW, I know of one child with the name, and although it's pronounced "Ava", it's spelled "Eva". Don't know others. Only know one Sophie too.)

Once you have your child you'll learn pretty quickly that most playgrounds, music classes, preschool classrooms, etc. around here include one or more Sophies, Isabellas, Olivias, and Avas. If you're okay with being part of that, then go for it! Some people really don't want that and some people couldn't care less. Only you know for sure.

FWIW, I grew up in the 80s with a more uncommon name and all I wanted was to be Jennifer or Amy like all my friends. Now that I'm older I like my name, but when I was a child I just wanted to fit in easier.

I like the name Phoebe, which sounds classic (also classical!) but is not too popular yet.

Where did your families come from before they were in America? Perhaps go back to your roots and choose a name from there?

What are their names? I'm guessing they weren't both Ava... There are

Neither of their names were Ava, but the meaning is what connects the name to my grandparents. I'm using the interpretation that Ava is a derivative of Eve, which means life. I've been searching for another girl's name with the same meaning but so far Ava is the only one we really like. It's important to us that the name is meaningful (to us) and I think I'd be okay knowing she'd likely be among other Ava's in her daycare, preschool, etc - but then again, knowing how trendy the name is today does kind of bother me!

I"m the almost-Amelia poster. Wondering if the actual Amelia naming mom has run into any other Amelias? We only know one other person (in person) who has chosen Amelia. I love Julia, but our boy is Julian, so that's out...

I have an Amelia who just turned 6 and is in kindergarten at a fairly large public school in Bethesda. She is the only Amelia in the whole school. We have met a few Amelia's here and there at the park in DC and her first year of preschool when she was 2 there were 3 in her preschool of 120 or so children! I have 2 boys with very common names. My advice is if you truly love a name, just go for it. We loved Amelia's name so much that I don't regret it one bit. I know people say it's becoming popular now but you cannot find anything personalized in the stores ever! Best of luck; I don't miss the naming process one bit!
