OMG thank god I saw this thread! (ha ha). But seriously, DH and I were going to name our child Amelia if it were a girl, thinking it was a rare choice. And it turns out it was number one in the country!!!!!!! We would have been disappointed to have gone with a common name. I liked Amelia because of the nod to Amelia Earhart, not because I'd heard it elsewhere. Gosh, I haven't heard of one other Amelia, but I guess I must have my head buried!

The ones that I think are very similar or a "combo" of your two favorites (Emma, Amelia, Ella) are pretty popular.

Some other options:

Annelise
Eliza
Lila
Amirah
Elise
Elena

Playing the name game
Updated: 9:56

This is the fun time of year when we start seeing the lists of the year's top baby names, which makes for an interesting sociological snapshot of a moment in history. According to babynames.com, here are this year's most-frequently seen baby names on their Web site. (Note: The Social Security administration has not compiled their 2009 list yet, but the 2008 list is a bit more traditional, especially for boys.)
Top Girls' Names 2009:
Amelia
Isabella
Ava
Sophia
Olivia
Madeline
Lily
Abigail
Chloe
Emma

Top Boys' Names 2009:
Aiden
Noah
Liam
Caden
Ethan
Jackson
Landon
Jacob
Caleb
Lucas

The babycenter.com list did not have Amelia in the top 10, it was #57. Maybe it was a typo in the WP

1 Isabella
2 Sophia
3 Emma
4 Olivia
5 Ava
6 Madison
7 Madelyn
8 Chloe
9 Lily
10 Addison

My mom's name is Amelia (named after her grandmother) and she HATED it growing up, amongst all the Lindas and Barbaras and Kathies. Now, she's hearing it in public places more and more and it's kind of freaking her out... she goes by a nickname, and was only ever called Amelia when she was in trouble. I have to giggle at the mental image of my 60ish mother in the Dollar Store, hearing her own name in an exasperated maternal tone, and being transported right back to her childhood!

Unfortunately we're not in France, so everyone will call her Agnes (pronounced AG-NES).

Wow, that's a shocker. My mother and I are both named for our grandmothers, and they were named for their grandmothers. And both our names are currently in the top 10! So there's a little proof that in some families, anyway, we mean it when we say our trendy names are timeless/classic/family names!

I love Elise. Reminds me of the Christopher Reeve movie, Somewhere in Time. Jane Seymour played Elise McKenna. Classic, not overused and so pretty.

Amelia is a lovely name, although I would check the trends here. You can see how a name is growing in popularity over the past several years:

Also check out the Baby Name Wizard for some fun:

Another good site:

How about Susannah? Tons of great nicknames, classic, not overused at all?

Mom to a three week old Elena here, so clearly I like that name.
