It can, but mostly it will not. And sometimes the people looking are just being nosy and judgmental.

Look, we're allowed to be "nosy and judgmental" when choosing nannies/babysitters for our children. The teachers who influence our children and teens are just as important. MCPS has a history of not checking Maryland court records before hiring. If they had, Colin Black (Einstein) never would have been hired with a former charge of public urination and basically a history that adds up to alcoholism. If MCPS does not do this due diligence, parents have to.

I think that teachers should be better paid. I also think that they should be role models for our children. Yes, that means keep your bikini pics to your own set of adult friends. Use your privacy settings. Stop friending my teen on Instagram.

Do you also check on your pediatrician? Your child’s coach or private music teacher? The clergy at your house of worship? The parents of your child’s friends?

No one “friends” anyone on Instagram.

Okay, they "follow."

Let me get this straight, you let the pediatrician privately examine your teen without checking his court record on case search, but you are freaked out that a teacher is openly following your son on Instagram? Or do you stay in the room while your high schooler has his physical?

I would be upset if my child's pediatrician was escorted away by police while my child was in the office. Heck, I'd be upset if my podiatrist was escorted away by police while I was in the office.

Good point. I guess that I have more trust in the monitoring of the state licensing board for doctors than I have in MCPS. The pediatrician does not see my child everyday, however. Daily interaction more easily leads to grooming and casual conversations.

DP

A pediatrician spends about 10 minutes, once a year with my kid. And I’m waiting out in the lobby or the parking lot.

Much different situation.

You shouldn't. After a bad interaction with a doctor (not a pediatrician) I looked them up in the MD Board of Physicians website and found that their license had been revoked in multiple other states, but MD reinstated their license after multiple infractions, including after catching the doctor practicing during the time their license had been suspended!

And to the poster above, yes, I personally check as many people as possible especially after that experience with the doctor. It is very easy for people to slip through through the cracks. These databases are public for a reason, so the public CAN check, and try to ensure their own safety.

Not the PP who you are trying to ridicule, but I do check on our doctors/dentists, etc. The State of Maryland Licensing Boards have an online list of any disciplinary actions taken against licensees. It’s worth checking, if you don’t.

It’s completely reasonable when dealing with your kids.

I didn’t read the link, but I am well aware that things can happen. The Nasser guy comes to mind immediately.

So I do check on doctors. But I also think it’s different when it’s a teacher who spends hours a week with your kid, versus a ped, who sees your kid once or twice a year.

+1 Google Maryland Board of Physicians.

Actually, I think you can even just Google Maryland Board of Physicians Disciplinary Actions?

Each Board should be keeping track of issues that come up with licensees.

So so much.

Mostly, I think the school system is just too big. And that makes it so hard to run it efficiently.

Lack of leadership. Lack of accountability.

My child came home with the same story. I don't think this will be a situation in which there was a medical emergency in the family.

It does remind me though of when the Athletic Director made an announcement to the track team last year that the coach was on administrative leave and no written message went to families for 2 months.

A clear and concise message from the principal would ease parental concerns and stop the rumors.

Exactly which elected politician can can implement complete accountability in MCPS?

MCPS is filled with people covering their butts, aiming for their next promotion, and caring very little for the children they are in trusted to teach.
