Can I assume everyone who is hating on Bullis had a child who went there and they didn’t like it? If not, I am curious where your child goes to school...

There are personal issues that are coming through in these opinions on the DCUM, clearly. I would say almost nobody makes such important decisions based on anonymous opinions online. Those of us with kids at Bullis or who have kids who will be attending have our eyes wide open.

People love to wave the Niche and Great Schools rankings around - except those for Bullis (#8 for 2019), which obviously must be wildly inaccurate. The college acceptance list is stellar and public for all to see. The facilities are unrivaled. Yet, the school is a “joke,” “useless,” you name it. Just ignore the noise. It is what it is on this board - the “big 3” are good, everything else is mediocre and not worth applying. Whatever LOL

Bullis college matriculations are pretty embarrassing and not even on the same league as the big 3 or even GDS.

Not everyone is worried about how prestigious the college that their children go to is. Some people just want their kids to do their best, be happy, and go to a school that helps them achieve their goals. To make fun of a school because not all of the kids head to an Ivy speaks to who you are as a person. I hope that you are aware of how you are coming across. Can you enlighten us and let us know what school your child goes to? Those that talk smack never seem to be willing to let us know what school community they are a part of. Isn’t that interesting?

Not only that, Bullis places kids in decent schools. Maybe not as many Going to Ivy’s as the big 3’s, but it’s respectable

OP, DCUM lives inside its own head, rocking in a corner. Do your own research.

Surprised they didn’t like Landon which has a Bethesda address

Bullis is a joke of a school. They are so desperate for applicants that they even spammed the summer camp registrants last year and asked them to consider applying.

Uh, that’s just good marketing. I’ve worked at several independent scoops and it’s common practice. Why wouldn’t you invite people who already have experience on your campus to take a closer look? You’re really reaching for an insult.

I don't know, the tone of the note was pretty desperate in my opinion. Both of my kids have been doing camps there for numerous years, and this is a first. I think their applications are way down and hence they are reaching out. My kids have done camps at many other independent schools, and I have never been contacted by admissions. Colleges are different because they are always trying to get their applications up so their acceptance rates can be lowered.

Here's the note I received last July:

Dear Families,

Could the tired, happy child at your dinner table each night benefit from a year-round Bullis education? As your children try new things, learn, grow, and make friends this summer, we are delighted to be spending time with them through Bullis Summer Programs.

If you think Bullis might make a good academic home for your child, we’d love to talk it over with you. We serve girls and boys from Kindergarten through high school, and we spend every day creating a challenging, caring school community for students. We will accept late applications for review at select grade levels where space is available for the 2018-2019 school year. Contact us at admission@bullis.org or 301-983-5724.

Our admission office is always available. Our parent ambassadors are always eager to share about their Bullis experience. And we would be delighted give you a tour or discuss how Bullis could offer your child opportunities to grow, learn and make friends year-round.

We invite you to stop by the admission office, email us at admission@bullis.org, or call 301-983-5724. We look forward to sharing our ideas about how to provide your child with the best possible education and opportunities at Bullis.

Sincerely,

The Bullis Admissions Team

THIS is your idea of desperate? It's a nice, polite note that lets you know that spaces are available in some grades. As a Bullis parent, I happen to know that most parents are always available to talk to prospective parents--in fact, I just received a request from the school to help a newly admitted parent who is concerned about commute, as we live in the same area and are also relatively new to the school. Bullis does not actually take everyone, contrary to what DCUM would have you believe. They do a great job with kids who have diferent learning needs, I suspect that drives a lot of the nasty comments regarding the low academic standards. Or perhaps it's because it used to be where you sent your boys when they were thrown out of public school--in the 1970s.

Thank god I didn't discover this forum until after my kids started at Bullis, it might have kept me from applying.

Sorry, I have no idea how to truncate a quote.

I wanted to know where the person who thinks all schools are better has kids in school.

Perhaps for Catholics but overall.....not even close.

OP said "sports aside," so for Catholics, St. Anselm's is the academic school.

The anti-Bullis crowd here is absurd. Do your own research. I chose Bullis over these schools with no regrets. Am now a partner at an AmLaw 100 firm.

This, entirely. There is a coordinated effort to trash Bullis on DCUM, and to elevate STA, NCS, Maret, and Sidwell. If your child does not attend one of these four schools or end up in an Ivy League school, your kid is a dunce and should expect to be a failure in life, clearly.

As someone has stated already, the acceptances and matriculations for Bullis are impressive, and they are on their website (see below). Objective fact. If you think that only Ivy League schools are worth anything (and many Bullis kids get into Ivy Leagues - another objective fact), then of course, Bullis is a waste of time. The fact that a school has spots (already an erroneous conclusion) doesn’t mean that it’s not a good school - what a stupid assumption.

If you want to pay $1 million for your kid to go to Penn State or Syracuse be my guest.

Furthermore, the children have amazing robotics, engineering, art and music classes. My wife and i both went to Ivy Schools and were very impressed. These parents on this board are steering you incorrectly. Steer your own ship

Classic post. PP, you are no very right, Ivy or not. Facilities do not equal top academics or quality. Plus, STA's facilities as part of the Cathedral close are unparalelled.

I’m not sure where I said facilities make for a great school. Why don’t you please re-read what I wrote and then we can go from there, because as of now your reply makes no sense in regards to what I originally said.
