decades ago they rejected me, and Duke accepted me. We all heard they did not want Maryland kids.

Similar story here. Waitlisted at UVA, admitted to Harvard. No joke. Applying from MA though.

Yeah, don't think it was an anti-MD thing just the tough OOS thing.

Let the record show that UVA reject kids with perfect ACTs and only 1 or 2 Bs on their high school transcript.

Shocked by this! Are you in-state?

UVA really doesn't care as much about SAT/ACT scores, but REALLY cares about GPA and rigor of coursework relative to school offerings.

No. As said several times above, and per Dean J who writes their admissions blog, they care much more about the grades obtained in rigorous courses and much less about GPA as it is too hard to compare.

This was our understanding too. DC has a 1490 SAT, 33 ACT But didn’t even apply because of his 4.0 weighted GPA. On the tour they mentioned how much they value GPA. He got in everywhere he applied but didn’t apply to very competitive colleges. Good colleges, but nothing with less than maybe a 40% acceptance rate.

Ok, yes technically GPA is re-calculated -- and comparing between schools it is important to note as GPAs calculations vary widely. But if you look in the context of your school's Naviance profile what you will see is a sea of green checks (admits) over a fairly straight line of GPAs (in our school it's around 4.3) with some fuzziness over the border. Occasionally a kid with 4.1 gets in and a kid with 4.5 does not--but hundreds and hundreds over several years follow this highly structured pattern. Because more than 25% of students take enough APs/IBs to meet the criteria of "rigorous course load," GPA is a fairly good proxy for what they look at. BUT the SAT axis can vary from 1200-1600, but the GPA axis has almost no variation. And it looks pretty much the same for any of the other NOVA public high school Naviance profiles I've seen. W&M is different--they seem to do a ratio of SAT. So a kid with a 3.9 might get in with a 1550 SAT whereas a kid with a 4.5 and a 1250 might not.

Totally agree. GPA alone may not speak by itself, but GPAs in the Naviance do show the pattern. And we have to assume everything else is equal...

No such thing. Attempting to get into reaches and then going there without merit aid or just wanting a name, is selling yourself short.

I think so and I’m really disappointed in our college counseling but he also had scholarships in mind and I appreciate that. He doesn’t want a hyper-competitive environment. I think he’s made some good choices but I also agree with you. It’s been a difficult process.

OP - my kid purposefully chose to land where she is at the 75th percentile versus a reach. She was concerned about having to be playing her A-game every minute of every day. She didn't choose what I would have chosen for her, but in the end, it turns out, she was right and I was not.

Thank you! This is what I’m counting on too. He made some thoughtful choices and I think at least a few are also good personality matches, so I am hopeful for the same outcome.

Not in light of SCHEV Statistics. The bottom 25% of the UVA entering class in fall of 2017 had a 4.16, so the applicant with a 4.0 weighted GPA would be in the bottom 12.5% of the class. http://research.schev.edu//enrollment/B10_FreshmenProfile.asp

You are welcome. Since you liked my first post, here's some hard earned advice: now keep your mouth shut!!! your kid is going to say some crazy things as he works this through and tries them all on for size (in his mouth). If you want to have a real conversation, do it (and you will have to have some of those to talk about real differences and money). Don't say too much, and don't make every conversation about college. You will just piss him off (especially since everything else you say will be combatting senioritis). From now until May, less is more.
