Let the record show that UVA reject kids with perfect ACTs and only 1 or 2 Bs on their high school transcript.

Shocked by this! Are you in-state?

UVA really doesn't care as much about SAT/ACT scores, but REALLY cares about GPA and rigor of coursework relative to school offerings.

No. As said several times above, and per Dean J who writes their admissions blog, they care much more about the grades obtained in rigorous courses and much less about GPA as it is too hard to compare.

This was our understanding too. DC has a 1490 SAT, 33 ACT But didn’t even apply because of his 4.0 weighted GPA. On the tour they mentioned how much they value GPA. He got in everywhere he applied but didn’t apply to very competitive colleges. Good colleges, but nothing with less than maybe a 40% acceptance rate.

Your kid may have sold himself a little short

I think so and I’m really disappointed in our college counseling but he also had scholarships in mind and I appreciate that. He doesn’t want a hyper-competitive environment. I think he’s made some good choices but I also agree with you. It’s been a difficult process.

OP - my kid purposefully chose to land where she is at the 75th percentile versus a reach. She was concerned about having to be playing her A-game every minute of every day. She didn't choose what I would have chosen for her, but in the end, it turns out, she was right and I was not.

Thank you! This is what I’m counting on too. He made some thoughtful choices and I think at least a few are also good personality matches, so I am hopeful for the same outcome.

You are welcome. Since you liked my first post, here's some hard earned advice: now keep your mouth shut!!! your kid is going to say some crazy things as he works this through and tries them all on for size (in his mouth). If you want to have a real conversation, do it (and you will have to have some of those to talk about real differences and money). Don't say too much, and don't make every conversation about college. You will just piss him off (especially since everything else you say will be combatting senioritis). From now until May, less is more.

I am the poster of the kid with high stats that was rejected from UVA (first post quoted here). We had a similar situation, but on a different level. DS loved the Catholic colleges because of the sense of community and giving back. That is why his list was Catholic heavy. He threw UVA in because he liked the campus and frankly felt he needed a couple of non Catholic schools. Because of that and his high stats, we encouraged him to apply to Dartmouth, Yale or Northwestern, but he had no interest. He did not want the "cut throat" culture. Thankfully he got into his first choice school...but, yes, we are done nagging him about college applications! The tension in our household has gone from 100 to zero. Sadly, DH still says we shot too low...I guess he wanted to bragging rights even if he enrolled elsewhere lol.

Would love to read more stats from those willing to share. (Maybe those who want to debate getting into UVA could just start their own thread)?

Would people mind sharing majors or areas of interest? Particularly interested in math and music.

In so far at Michigan and Wisconsin EA plus a couple of safeties. Waiting to hear from others. 1500 SAT, 4.2 GPA. Child is happy and fortunate to have the acceptance at Michigan since we know several with similar or better stats who were deferred.

No offense, but why can't you just post the colleges. Saying "safeties" sounds ridiculous

Very nice acceptances. May I ask if your child demonstrated interest in U of M and Wisconsin?

You clearly don’t have a senior. Don’t worry, you’ll get used to it.

I do have a senior. I know what a safety is. But the whole point of the thread is to post the schools.

No demonstrated interest. We’ve only visited the east coast schools.

No, I’m not going to name the safeties. I don’t have the list memorized, and besides, I’m sure someone would just claim that they aren’t safeties, and those posts are beyond boring and completely unhelpful.

That doesn't happen if you say "DC was admitted EA to UM, UW, UX,UY,UZ". It only happens when you feel compelled to brag that "UX,UY, and UZ were her safeties".

People get to what they want, the way they want. Who appointed you curator of this forum? Jeez!

Every student has safeties, and if they choose wisely, they are admitted. There is no point in listing them because it just riles people up.

But next time I’ll be sure to check with you on my wording, my underlying biases and psychosocial profile, and the amount of information I divulge before posting.

More stats please....

Honestly, why can't people just post the stats. Nothing is more annoying than saying "some schools" . Just list the darn school and which ones are deferred, rejected, accepted, still waiting. It.is.not.that.hard

Mine will be going to NOVA Community College.
