unweighted is the only thing that should matter. |
UVA doesn't engage in yield protection; it doesn't have to. You need a 4.44+ if not URM, Low income, etc. to get into UVA even with perfect scores, especially if from NOVA. |
Oh Lord. That’s not true. It entirely depends on the HIGH SCHOOL that your NoVA kid attends. I have 2 in FCPS and the cutoffs from Naviance are not *that* severe. Do you even have a high schooler? |
just on this thread alone, there is someone who got into uva with a 4.2 & someone (asian/white, obviously not urm) who got in with a 4.07. And they obviously got in early w/o being deferred. Where do you get the .44 anyway? 4.44 gets you in but not 4.43? And I don't know where you are but in fcps, there really aren't even that many kids with 4.4. You must be in a county where gpa's go up much higher. Maybe Loudoun? |

3.6 UWGPA
3.8 WGPA (at private school with little weighed options) 33 ACT / 34 SS White female. Captain of 2 sports teams and President of 2 very active clubs. Lots of volunteer and other EC's too. Accepted to WPI (28K merit) ASU (16K merit) OSU (awaiting scholarship results) Purdue (no merit) WVU ($15K merit) UMich (no merit but 13K FA) Case Western (28K merit and FA package) Only denial so far is Maryland. Awaiting RPI which is a target, and Rice and GT which are reaches. |
PP here again. Once again, high school is private. Weighting is not as high as some publics. Kid is probably in top 10-15% of class. Half of the school are VA residents, so he has some tough competition within the school. Had he been in his local MCPS public school, I imagine he would have gotten at the very least deferred and had much higher likely of being admitted. It is fine...he is fine. We knew he would never end up there even if admitted because it was way down on his list. |
Similar story here. Waitlisted at UVA, admitted to Harvard. No joke. Applying from MA though. |
[b] Anyone in FCPS knows you need to be in top ten percent of your class to get into UVA. I have a senior there now. He would not get in today - that's how fast things are changing at all the state flagships. As to the data. Go to SCHEV.edu and you will get the incoming stats for last years (entering 2018, not accepted, which are higher stats). You can see that the top 25% median of the entering class t UVA last year was a 4.48 (that's where most of the FCPS kids are); median is a 4.33 and the bottom 25 percent of the class is a median 4.16. The bottom tends to be the TJ students, URM, Athletes, low-income, first generation, etc. etc. etc. So, yes, if you are caucasian at Langley or McLean you better have a 4.48 or higher to be accepted if thetop 25% of the entering class has that or better. Several of my DS's friends came in with 6.0s and 16 AP courses. Here is the SCHEV site. http://research.schev.edu//enrollment/B10_FreshmenProfile.asp. Just go to college confidential and read the results of the UVA EA class of 2023 and you will see the extraordinary records of students who get in and those deferred or denied. |
So many better schools your child has been accepted to anyway. I hope she can look past it. |
Well, dc's friend got in EA with 4.1 from one of those school. White, no hook, not even a legacy. |
| And yup, I knew it was you, the uva booster that always cite the same SCHEV report. Honestly, do you work for UVA? |

What’s WPI, ASU, OSU (Oklahoma?)? Wow, your DD got into Michigan but not MD? Michigan is probably a top 5 state school. |
Other schools wouldn't have considered/offered merit scholarships if the applicant took only regular level courses and not the most challenging courses offered by the high school. |
What makes the other schools “better”? |
