You're right. there are probably too many down-to=earth people at Montana State for your liking.

What about that post was not down to earth?

I honestly couldn't tell you where any of my neighbors or coworkers went to college.

Newsflash: most colleges are 80% white. It is in the top 1/3 of all colleges and top 1/4 of public colleges.

VT is 80% admission rate

But nice for you to assume it isn’t good for your kids based on a few numbers. Typical DCUMer

More like 62%. And wait until they're on the common app for a few years. It could go below 50%.

Generally speaking, what is the geographic job market for MSU graduates? I'm not talking about the one kid from 2016 who got a job in NYC, or the other from 2014 who works in Hong Kong - where does the typical graduate end up?

Wait, what? VT is on Coalition, much to the chagrin of students who only needed to fill out Coalition for VT. Please suggest to VT that they get on the Common App before my other DC gets to the application stage.

I can only provide anecdotal evidence (I'm the one from OR who had a number of friends go there). Some of my friends ended up in agriculture, whether running private ranches/farms or working for the Forest Service/BLM. A couple of them are in insurance/finance in Montana. One did end up in NYC -- I lost touch with her though. Not sure what she's doing there. Tech, maybe?

Who f’ing cares where you go to school. I mean really, only in DCUM do people care where you went to school. So many kids are really keeping their options open. My daughter has high ranked friends at Arizona State, Colorado State, U of Wash, Ole Miss, U of South Carolina, Cal Poly, UF, Pitt, U of Georgia, Charleston and all are thriving and happy. She also has friends at Michigan, Cornell, UPenn, UVA, Williams, and Rice who aren’t thriving. They are stressed, overwhelmed, and not very happy.

Potential employers and graduate school admissions officers, to name two fairly important (and obvious) categories.

There is such a thing as geographic diversity even in grad school admissions, and there aren't that many universities or colleges in that entire region of the United States. Same goes for employers. Who else are they hiring? Students from the University of Wyoming or Idaho or Iowa? I would assume those would all be at least comparable to Montana State. I can understand why people who live out this way may not realize it, but that part of the country is booming, and there's no reason to believe that the universities out there wouldn't jump on that bandwagon.

You are a snob and a half.

There are over 600 public 4yr colleges and over 1800 private 4yr colleges.

C'mon, 205 is pretty well down the list. 80% acceptance rate. Can't see that degree cutting much ice back here in the East. Except maybe with the Dept. of the Interior or somewhere like that.

Who would want to move back east? It honestly sucks here. Everyone acts rich and happy, but most are anxious and depressed drips of life just trying to fake their way thru another day.

OP, I fully support going to a college that has degrees they are interested in and place that will make them happy. And yes, merit aid is a HUGE draw and that is okay.

Jeez, take some agency in your life. You just sit there hating where you live? What a coward.

Not the PP but I am in the military and here for 1.5 years minimum. I had no idea how awful the DC area was. Counting down the months. Many people have to hate where they live if that is where the job is. Not many people truly want to live in this overpriced, over crowded, over political area. Maybe you, but not many more.

You seem nice.

I find it funny that this poster cannot think of a job, even on the East Coast, that is outside of the few square miles that is NWDC!

Same here, but I am not from her either. Maybe it is a posh DC thing?

The school has dramatically increased the out-of-state student population, so any past data may not predict future results.

Bump. OP did your kid apply? Does anyone have a current student at MSU? My son was just accepted, but he is already struggling with deciding on which school to choose, and we still have some pending applications.

I was a coach for a sport at an east coast D2 school and one of our kids was from MT and transferred back after 2 years to MSU. She’s very happy; we’re still in touch. She’ll be going to med school. If you and your child like the school and like the area there’s no reason your child can’t be happy and successful there.

It is also hugely popular with Californians. Many, many Californians are moving from California due to the extreme taxes and moving to Montana.
