My daughter has high ranked friends at Arizona State, Colorado State, U of Wash, Ole Miss, U of South Carolina, Cal Poly, UF, Pitt, U of Georgia, Charleston and all are thriving and happy. She also has friends at Michigan, Cornell, UPenn, UVA, Williams, and Rice who aren’t thriving. They are stressed, overwhelmed, and not very happy.

There is such a thing as geographic diversity even in grad school admissions, and there aren't that many universities or colleges in that entire region of the United States.   Same goes for employers.  Who else are they hiring? Students from the University of Wyoming or Idaho or Iowa? I would assume those would all be at least comparable to Montana State.   I can understand why people who live out this way may not realize it, but that part of the country is booming,  and there's no reason to believe that the universities out there wouldn't jump on that bandwagon.
