When a celebrity in person really underwhelms you

Paul Rudd seemed very tiny when I met him, but super nice guy! I’m 5’6” and I felt like he was close to me in height and that I could snap him in two.

Gladys Knight smiled and greeted everyone deplaning while she waited for someone traveling with her in the back.

Didn’t realize I was eating breakfast next to Jake Gyllenhaal for a while in NYC. handsome in person (same as how he appears to be in print and movies) but you know, you eat breakfast next to hot guys all time so didn’t really raise any flags...

I saw Seth Meyers at a lunch at Momofuku noodle bar one year before the holidays. It almost looked like a staff lunch. He seemed truly wonderful- funny, engaging, and nice to everyone around him.

Jim Kimsey was always very kind, generous, and surrounded by yes-men.

Saw Paul Newman a few times at a fancy food store in Ct that I worked at. He asked me to recommend peaches and requested a pecan pie, etc. Very polite, animated, and down to Earth. Gorgeous.!!! (Obviously.) This was about 30 years ago. Saw David Letterman and Jessica Tandy there, too. No impression or interaction.

Why?

I'm not that surprised, wasn't that in his "I hate all this attention so I wore a nazi costume top a Halloween party phase"?

Oh no! How so?

Is this really surprising? Dude is talented but he's troubled af. I would be more surprised if someone met him and he was personable honestly

Was in an airport lounge with J lo and one of her kids. She seemed really nice, a few people went up to her and signed autographs, chatted a little...very nice. I was underwhelmed by her looks though she was in a tight velour sweatsuit that did her no favors, had a little make up and just looked super plain and definitely not like her, if it wasn't for her bodyguard I would never have known.

Saw model Kendal Jenner in a restaurant in LA while I was there on business she seems completely full of herself. I was not impressed.

Met Dennis Quaid at the pool in our hotel years ago, such a nice guy....just your average next door guy, very friendly and I think handsome too!

Met Owen Wilson in NY within a few few months of when he tried to commit suicide. Could not have been nicer, such a low key charming guy, a real sweetheart.

Yes, he is! I stood in line one time with my kids so that they could meet him and get his autograph. They loved to watch him on t.v. When it was their turn to meet him he barely gave them the time of day, didn't crack a smile and was pretty much the exact opposite of what his t.v. personality was.

We haven't watch a show of his since. I have no idea if he is still on t.v. or not.

Was on a flight with Julie Bowen (Claire from Modern Family) and her 3 boys. She was loud, bossy and her kids were rambunctious in the airport. I recognized her voice but wasn’t completely sure it was her bc she had no makeup on and looked very basic. However, when the flight attendant was saying goodbye she mentioned the show.

Somehow I was never wowed by George Clooney on the screen. I saw him next to my office filming K Street years ago and WOW. He is one good-looking guy.

I saw Bethenny Frankel of RHONY fame in the Cancun airport last week with her daughter waiting for a flight. She didn’t have a nanny or assistant or anyone else with her and no one seemed to recognize her. She had no make up on and was wearing leather leggings which was odd because it was about 85 that day. Anyway she seemed very engaged with her daughter and normal. Kid looks NOTHING like her.

I live in NYC.

I’ve seen Tina Fey around the upper west side twice with her kid. She looks exactly the way you would imagine the avg DCUM mom looks!

Ellie Kemper in the grocery store, and while she is beautiful, she looks exactly her age. The basics are there to make it work on camera with makeup etc: good bone structure, good hair and teeth.

An Olsen twin once in a Duane Reade. She was with an entourage so it was immediately obvious. All I remember is that she was tiny.

Alan Alda on the street once, I just heard his voice and knew. I love him and he just looks like a regular guy.

I may have crossed paths with other celebrities, but there’s a whole category of people here about whom it’s impossible to tell if they’re famous or just really wealthy.

Patricia Clarkson lived in the building we used to live in in NYC. She was nice, but a little full of herself.

My mom used to work out at the same gym as Susan Sarandon and John Slattery. She also ran into Jake Gyllenhaal at Eately a few weeks ago. She said all of them just seemed like they wanted to be left alone, which makes sense.

My dad used to work in entertainment insurance and has met Prince (impeccably well-dressed, polite, and very soft-spoken), Eric Clapton (very polite and considerate to everyone, all the way from the janitors to his backing band), Brian Wilson (seemed super drugged out and was fascinated by my dad's pen), Fred Durst (a high-maintenance douche), and others.

I met Bill Clinton when I was in middle school. He signed an autograph for me. He was leaving the diner in Chappaqua, followed by a horde of middle-aged women. He was just about how you'd imagine.

I ran into Joe Biden a few years ago. He was exactly how you'd imagine; very friendly and charming. He seemed like he had an artificial tan.

Jennifer Garner was very receptive to curious people around her. She was underwhelming only looks wise as most people are without makeup. Her composure was impressive though, I would have been visibly annoyed by everyone greeting me.

Bobby Flay is small, and very professional and nice.
