FAS is awful, but it's not caused by a couple of carefully measured servings per week. |
Keep telling yourself that. There is NO amount determined to be SAFE. |
| Have you tried O'Doul's? Seltzer? I very much like the feeling of having something "nice" with my dinner. At that point, I'm sick of water. O'Doul's tastes good; it's basically like a Yuengling or other light lager. Seltzer makes me drink slowly and the bubbles feel festive. |

I’m apoaulled by the number of OS who say it’s ok. Clearly they have not been trained properly and I once switched because of it. Although it wasn’t long ago that drinking lightly (and smoking) during pregnancy was the norm and I guess they figure our generation turned out ok. Just lots of heroin addicts now. |
Please do not feel guilty!!! There is no saying what would or would not have occured here. I did not drink AT ALL. My child has ADHD and ASD. |
There are studies showing that light drinking during pregnancy does not impact children's development. It's certainly fair to to say those studies aren't enough for you, but there is a scientific basis for not abstaining completely. |
Details, please. |
I'm raising two boys who suffer from FASD. Thing is it's entirely 100% preventable and if your kid ends up with it, it's a life sentence. Also it can be years before you know if your pregnancy drinking caused problems for your child. At birth of your baby looks perfect, that shouldn't bring you peace of mind. You might have a decade before its discovered. My boys have really have had a tough time and there is no end in sight. They are now at the point where they totally understand why and processing the feelings that come with knowing that the person who is supposed to take care of you intentionally and knowingly engaged in behavior that resulted in what will be lifelong serious difficulties is really difficult. |
FASD is caused by alcoholic-level binging. Not a drink a week, or likely even a very small drink a day. That said, I am one of the posters who regrets drinking at all during pregnancy, although I drank very likely (maybe 2oz/wine a week?). That's because now, in hindsight, I'm extremely cautious with my risk-benefit analyses when it comes to my child's health, a perspective I did not have then. While I still think hysterical avoidance of sushi during pregnancy is silly, alcohol is a toxin, and although the studies have not shown an impact of light drinking, I think it's possible it's there. That said, I fully respect women who aren't as risk averse as me and still think it's NBD. The important thing is to A) be honest about how much you are actually drinking (which OP may not be doing); B) understand your own values. |
Read Expecting Better. That book lays it out much better than I could. |

Can I ask how much you drank during pregnancy? Just curious. |
DP but it's pretty obvious she's saying it's "half strength" because a spritzer is half wine, half club soda. That is half-strength by anyone's measure. |
I completely disagree with you, but I know a number of fetal alcohol babies. Alcohol is bad for your fetus. Period. |
