To those upset at Trump over child separation

Economic migration isn't political asylum.

We have enough poor people in this country. Every time I hear "They do jobs Americans won't do!" I laugh at the nonsense. There are no jobs Americans won't do. There are only jobs that Americans won't do for slave-labor wages. I'd like to see those wages rise - and they will when employers have to compete for employees. Let's take care of our own poor first, using the economic engine of our own country for our own people.

If we need to import poor people after a few years of robust economic development, I'll have more sympathy. For now, I'm more interested in uplifting my own folk.

+1. For $250K a year some people will move to the desert and pick lettuce 12 hours a day. Of course, then everyone will buy Mexican lettuce. Tout post just perpetuates myths beloved by ivory tower economists.

The UN has warned that separating migrant children from parents is illegal. I hope they censure THE US and that the World Court will file suit for crimes against humanity. Foreign leaders should deny Trump entry into their countries and expell IS diplomats.

Seriously, don’t engage. If those that think like them are the majority, we have already lost. Work on getting people that share your sense of outrage on this shameful chapter to vote in November and again in 2020. Find charities and groups you can support to help those in need now. Leave the politics forum alone - I hope it’s not represented Of American sentiments in general. But we won’t know until after the election.

Or else work on explaining why the U.S. shouldn't have borders. Explain the logic behind a country that cannot and should not enforce its own borders.

Because otherwise it sort of looks like poor people trying to exploit porous borders.

This is understandable but hardly makes for good national policy.

So I am not taking my own advice not to engage. But here goes...

I am actually not against an immigration policy that makes sense and that deports illegal aliens that commit crimes etc. I object strenuously to degrading our own sense of morality by treating people as “others” or “criminals” for no good reason. I think it diminishes us and our ideals. Have laws, yes. Enforce laws, yes. But be compassionate and treat people as human beings. Don’t break faith with DACA recipients. Crack down on businesses and employees that break labor laws. And under no circumstance, separate a child from their parent for at worst a misdemeanor charge and often time with no charge (you are allowed to ask for asylum - that doesn’t make you a criminal). Again, the true horror is who we are becoming when we act so contrary to the ideals emblazoned on Lady Liberty.

Unfortunately, DACA was an Obama era executive action. It's not legislation. If you want to see legislation that benefits DACA recipients, you should start by lobbying legislators to pass legislation to that effect. Presidential fiats can be done and undone "at the stroke of a pen." It's irresponsible for a nation of law to behave otherwise. Obama acted like an Emperor when creating DACA and Trump is acting like an Emperor when erasing that legacy.

Advocate for laws.

Wow. Such a shallow understanding of both immigration law and executive authority on display in this post. Prosecutorial discretion is not ruling by “Executive fiat”. USCIS and ICE have to make decisions about who to pursue and who to prosecute. They can’t do it all. They have to prioritize resources. When the president simply tells them what the priorities should be. Obama did it, Trump did it. All presidents do it. Congress ceded much of its constructional authority to regulate who comes into the country to the president through amendments to the INA. That combined with the president’s constitutional authority and supra-constitutional soverign authority gives the president almost exclusive authority over who comes into the country. Congresss on the other hand has undisputed constitutional authority to decide who becomes citizens. Thus DACA has to be done with the continuing cooperation of both the president and Congress. It’s not an area where Congress can just pass a law and make it happen.

Sure they can. They just don't want to.

Nope. That’s not how immigration law works. See above.

why do liberals all favor illegals over us citizens? There is seriously something very wrong with them—to turn your back on your fellow Americans and push illegals through the system? That’s some serious “compassion” right there.

This. We could do a lot to address the poverty and low wages of many of our existing citizens, if we didn't have a flow of undocumented workers willing to undercut them in the labor market.

Tell them to get to California. Those fruits and vegetables aren't going to pick themselves.

Yup. And the wages will be better without an influx of undocumented workers.

No, the issue is farmers can't find Americans who are willing to work in the fields. Please do some reading and learn more about the issues.

It is now common knowledge that illegal immigration into the United States is being treated as the crime that it legally is. When an adult with a minor child commits a crime, they are detained. Part of that detention is that someone has to take care of their minor children.

Many minor children of detained people --US citizens included, end up in foster care. But while they are waiting for their foster parents, they are placed in group homes. The children's detention center is a very large group home.

So, as a parent, knowing that illegal immigration is no longer tolerated in the US and that you will be separated from your child,

why do you as the adult still make the decision to commit the crime?

lLIAR. Asylum seeker are here legally.

Economic migration isn't political asylum.

That may be true, but the fact of the matter is that this determination is not up to you, and not up to the ICE agents. If they are not eligible for asylum, the judge will rule to that effect. These decisions are made in courts, not by random bozos on the internets.

the courts

lol

I have a friend who works for immigration. Remember the last time we had the influx of undocumented minors? It backed up the courts for months, as processing them took forever. She was sent on trips to help with processing.

Let the courts decide. ha! By the time that happens, many will be gone.

Well there is the disagreement. I would say that ripping apart children from their parents is anything but humane.

It’s all part of Stephen Miller and Jeff Sessions’ larger ethnic cleansing program.

It doesn't matter. That's the way this country is set up. Courts make decisions, not anyone else. If you are worried about escape, keep families together in detention, I'm sure it will be cheaper anyway.

How is it a fair trial when you don't get a lawyer? Even children who are 5 must appear in court without a lawyer or a Casa rep

And I repeat - try to break a law in any of the countries that these people are coming from and see how humanely you will be treated.
Authorities have to make sure that a person with the child is really a parent or legal caretaker. Obama opened the gate to minors' trafficking when he granted special treatment to the illegals who enter US with the child. I am sure (sincerely) that he meant the best for these kids and did not realize that there are too many criminals/scammers out there who would use children (biological or random) as a free pass to US. Illegals brought it upon themselves by trying to scam this country. Sad for honest people who are in real trouble, indeed.
