| People on this thread are crazy. |
| Yes, they are. |
| It's not all kids, but there's a significant group of kids who start drinking in middle school and then continue into high school. And when they're 15-16 they start going to the 18+ clubs and when they're 17-18 they get fake IDs and go to 21+ clubs. Just like it was when we were in HS, these kids are the "popular" clique, and around here that means their parents tend to be the rich and famous. In the 8 years my kids have been in high school I think the kids have started drinking at a younger age, the number of HS partiers has increased, as well as the number of parents who shrug it off and say "kids will be kids." +2 I also think that some parents come from really, really sheltered backgrounds (which they think is ok, when what they really need is therapy), so they think that anything that they do not do is horrific. They are the same parents that catastrophize almost any situation. Watch your own kids, how about that. Pretending things don't happen or that anything you don't do is horrific does your children no favors. You can't bring your child up "sheltered" as you were, because let's face it, it pretty much effed you up. |
You're so right. People seem to think it's no big deal for a 12, 13, or 14 year old to get drunk. |
| Not remotely sheltered. As the youngest of 5, I had almost no supervision as a teen and was myself in the "cool" party crowd. And I wish I hadn't been. Fortunately, I made it out without anything tragic happening directly to me, but lost close friends to drunk driving. There is no good reason for 12 to 14 year olds to be given the slightest impression that this kind of behavior is just kids being kids. I'm curious, those of you saying you're fine with your children attending events with other drunk children there, what schools do you send your children to? At my children's school, there truly are not 7th and 8th graders who drink. |
Not ONE single person on this thread has said they think its okay for kids to drink. Not one. Everyone, including me, has said the opposite. But we have said that the White Party is fine (and similar to most middle school mixers at local privates) and that prohibiting kids from attending is NOT the answer, especially since kids don't drink at the White Party. Its the pre-parties where this happens fyi. There is far too much hyperbole and misplaced outrage on this thread. Here is an idea - Spend that energy parenting your kid and teaching your kid about the consequences of bad choices and inappropriate behavior so they recognize and avoid it when they see it, because I promise you, they will see it and hear about it sooner or later and its better to give them the tools to handle it starting when the behavior starts amongst their peers. |
How would you think you would know? My child is a high schooler, and I've recently learned there's a student in DCs grade that has a serious problem with alcohol. I would have made your claim in 7th or 8th grade, because the problem wasn't public enough at that point, and my child didn't run with that child's crowd. On the other hand, I was aware of a drug problem at another middle school because they expelled kids (and it made the middle school gossip channels, which is how I found out because my child wanted to know what happens when someone is expelled). My momentary thankfulness that my child wasn't being exposed to that was entirely misguided although I didn't know it at the time. |

My Sidwell eighth grader did not go but claims many of his friends did. A few questions-
How much did tickets cost? Who or what is the actual sponsor? Are there a lot of these kinds of dances throughout high school? |
| More importantly- does anyone know if the child who left with EMS is OK? My child would like to know- we are praying for the student. |
$60 FAQs - http://www.dbcrfunevent.com/faq There are a handful of dances hosted by various private and parochial schools each semester. Most are limited to 7th and 8th graders, all are on a much smaller scale and hosted in a school gym. |
Weird and inappropriate both - yea!! |
Yeah! So what if it was the location of a major civil rights protest of the segregation of the Crystal Palace Pool during the lifetime of many people on this website...it's all in the past! There's no more racism now--why call attention to anything that makes white people feel uncomfortable! So oversensitive, sheesh! |
I don't know anyone from Sidwell who went to this. |
I’m sure that the venue is happy to have the business so that they don’t go bankrupt. |
