she's Cuban. Many Cubans - and other Latinos - look white.

She has no discernible accent at all.

Ok? And?

I wish the writer would disclose who her UF married -- I'd bet she married well. Really, the undercurrent of the piece is the writer didn't find a born or soon-to-be rich Ivy husband while in college.

And being a tenured professor at a Big10 college is a pretty freaking big deal. She probably makes $150,000 a year...for life?

Are you saying that is a lot or not a lot? Hard to understand your tone here.

Trump is a Cornell grad, AFAIK. Shocker, I know.

She studied english, so yeah, a six figure tenure gig at a big10 university is a genuine big deal. She sounds like a malcontent. Or this is just a bs op-ed she whipped up for college decisions week.

I bet she never clicks the white box on any admissions or job forms.

Her 1016-2017 salary was $46136 (English) and $30757 (Ethnic studies). State employee salary is a matter of public record. You can google. Some unis such as U of CA offer free housing not reflected in salary because of cost of living. Not sure about Nebraska.

She wrote she just got the tenure offer, which comes with a big bump in pay, so her 2016-2017 salary is misleading.

Probably nothing. It's just part of publish or perish thing. Very little from academic books either as they don't sell in high number. But they can secure jobs. Rough world.

assistant profs in English don't make six figures.

Tenure is a pay bump, prob about $7-10k at Nebraska, so she's going to make approx. $85k this year. Nearing six figures before factoring in perks in ultra low cost flyover country.

Her emphasis on herself being Cuban and a first gen college student had me expecting an accent for some reason. I wasn't expecting her to look like a typical white girl from Miami. Obviously, you can be a white girl of Cuban heritage from Miami and still be a first gen college student. Good for her for being the first in her family to go to college.

Anonymous wrote:Just saw this online today - sort of interesting perspective although she lost me at the end. It's about a woman who chose between a full ride to U of Florida and some assistance (but not a lot) at Cornell. She's an adult now and reflecting on her choice.

What she is saying is that the braces made her teeth straighter, but she is who she is, regardless.
