Volvo SUV dream went south, need plan B for a reliable family car.

Really people? No one considering a Volvo XC90 that runs $60K+ well equipped (like the PP test model reviewed in the link above) is looking at a $30K Subaru as a comparable alternative.

I'll disagree.

We compared the Audi and the Volvo and the Outback. Honestly the Outback has been phenomenal. Glad we didn't spend the extra money. YMMV

I've lived in MD/VA over the past 45 years and I've known at least a dozen people over that time that have driven a Subaru forester and they were all LGBTQ and/or crunchy (save the earth type) people. Nothing against either group... I've had several good friends, a couple neighbors and even a boss who all drove Subaru forestors and fell into one of these groups. I always just wondered why this seemed to be the case. I'm sure this isn't representative of all Subaru drivers but it's been something I always wondered about since I haven't seen something like this with other cars.

I'm the PP.

FWIW, I'm the PP with an Outback and am a conservative, heterosexual, minority female with kids. I used to actually think the same thing - that Subarus were for LGBTQ people. Not sure where that comes from?

Right. Why would anyone want to spend double the money when there is no need to. Especially on an asset that immediately depreciates.

I do strongly suggest test driving whatever you're considering. I'm a shorter female, and also found the Audi 5 to have huge blind spots, and the BMWX5 (and 3, and even the tiny electric one) to be really uncomfortable to reach the seatbelt return (which seems like a small thing, but I would end up with a huge knot if my back if I did that 4-6 times a day, every day). Ended up with the smaller Volvo - the XC-60. Love it so far... I did also like the way the Forrester and the Honda handled - comfortable and small blind spots (yes, even with sensors, safe drivers need to be able to actually see) but figured I'd be happier with the fancier car in 10 -15 years, since we tend to drive our cars into the ground.

Second this. On my second Q5 and love it!

I had a XC70 in the early 2000's and it was endless trouble. Blinker fuses would go. Check engine light all the time.
Final straw was the transmission system software(?) malfunction on a return trip from the beach and car stopped working every 20 min. or so. I'd sit, restart, and drive for another 20 min. Finally had to call a tow truck to return to this side of the Bay Bridge.

volvo was completely rebooted and purchased by another company starting with the new xc90. it is the best suv on the market besides the tesla.[/quote

I have the new one and it’s been great—no problems. My only complaint is not enough space for my junk in the front. But I was used to a minivan.

Great thread. I’ve been looking at Car and Driver for reviews and youtube has some good reviews. I told DC they could have my old paid off SUV before I went out and test drove the new ones with reviews in hand. Mistake.

I’ll keep watching this thread hoping people come up with that magic suv.

Op, I was thrilled to have one of the first xc90s but, would only sell it to a mechanic by the very end.

FWIW, our XC90 is absolutely incredible. Our 2016 Honda Pilot is blah for many reasons and the X5 we sold was full of problems.

Oh man. I wanted the XC90, but now reading this I'm getting cold feet. What about the Infiniti QX60?

Subaru deliberately marketed to the LGBTQ community. Of course, itt has also marketed heavily to dog owners, outdoorsy people, and people worried about safety (the "They lived" ads).

I'm just a data point but we are a straight white liberal couple with one kid, one dog, and one car, which is a Subaru; I have been in love with Subarus since my friend had one in high school. My gay sister drives a Scion.

It doesn't matter how much the thing cost. The bottom line is it is a poorly built Chinese car.

Range River also costs a lot, nevertheless, it is the car with tons of problems.

Former VW owner here- I wouldn’t drive another one if you paid me. Enjoy having your car in the shop every weekend.
