Second this. On my second Q5 and love it!

I had a XC70 in the early 2000's and it was endless trouble. Blinker fuses would go. Check engine light all the time.
Final straw was the transmission system software(?) malfunction on a return trip from the beach and car stopped working every 20 min. or so. I'd sit, restart, and drive for another 20 min. Finally had to call a tow truck to return to this side of the Bay Bridge.

volvo was completely rebooted and purchased by another company starting with the new xc90. it is the best suv on the market besides the tesla.

I got a Jeep Grand Cherokee last year and I like it very much.

I chuckled on the inside when i read this. You do realize this company you're talking about is Geely from China, right? Nothing against Chinese companies, but reliability is not their strongest suit.

The Subaru Ascent does look tempting. I regret the day I traded in my Hyundai Santa Fe for a Touareg. Nothing wrong with the VW, but I miss my Santa Fe.

When was it purchased and by whom? The 2016 reviews are pretty bad and going well into 2017. Just wondering
when was it supposed to improve?

I desperately need a plan B. What car brand /model would you recommend that would have comparable size
and good safety features but would be reliable and safe?

overreaction, it's still the best suv out there. google the brands and you can find even more.

That is actually the root of a problem, overgoogling .
The more one searches the more problems one finds.

Never mind. I just looked it up. So apparently according to Wiki Volvo now is owned by a Chinese company since 2010.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volvo_Cars

Volvo Cars (Swedish: Volvo personvagnar), stylized as VOLVO in the logo, is a Swedish vehicle manufacturer established in 1927 and headquartered on Torslanda in Gothenburg. Although often conflated with the Swedish-owned heavy truck and construction equipment conglomerate AB Volvo, also based in Gothenburg, the two firms have been independent since AB Volvo sold Volvo Cars to Ford Motor Company in 1999. Volvo Cars has been owned since 2010 by the Geely Holding Group, a Chinese multinational automotive manufacturing company.

+1. We got the 2018 limited and it’s great. Better ride than Highlander, loaded with every bell &whistle.

I'm eyeballing the Subaru Ascent for our next family car, but we are an Outback family (seriously, we own two) and love them. I'd buy any of their cars in a heartbeat.

Completely false. Although I do agree that the other brands mentioned here probably do not carry enough status for OP.

Sorry but Volvo sucks.
My Mom bought one less than two years ago & it has been in the shop off + on for various mechanical issues.
She is going to keep it until the warranty is done.
It is a pure lemon.

She likely will purchase a Honda or Toyota next as she learned the hard way these past years just how important reliability factors into any car she buys.
