I was in a similar situation, but DH finally started to address it. I have to admit, I nagged a bit, which was not very effective.
I think what finally "worked" was that he saw several photos of himself that rendered him unable to deny that he got fat, and he decided to make a change. Not sure if that can help you, but thought I'd share just in case. Good luck!

Darn. DH actually carries his weight quite well, so he would have to gain *a lot* more weight to look noticeably overweight in a photo.

Exactly this. People calling OP shallow are probably heavy themselves or are one of those couple where both are heavy so they don't get it. Being heavy isn't just about the visual, there are things that go along with it that can impact a relationship.
