+1000. And I hope THAT is what will be reversed in the Trump administration. Fine if you want to get "married," but I don't have to bake your wedding cake. |
And, as a gay person, I would have ZERO interest in someone who was baking my cake in spite of their beliefs and hated having to do it. That sounds like a nightmare for me. I would much rather allow people the power to turn down baking a cake for a gay couple so that I could find someone who will bake it with love and joy. Sure, it would hurt my feelings but it's better than having a wedding cake that was baked with hatred |
Do you actually bake cakes for a living? And what if a business refused to serve you because they didn't believe in your bigotry? I'm sure you'll be fine with that, even if there were no other similar business within 50 miles of your house, right? |
NP. How would that come up? After looking into the issue, from what I understand, the evangelical bakers aren't going "My gaydar tells me you like men, so I refuse to bake this My Little Pony cake you're requesting for your niece's seventh birthday party," but rather, "I will not bake a cake for your marriage to another man." So yes, I think it would be right and that the PP should be okay with a business refusing to bake him/her a cake saying "I don't have to bake gay people's wedding cakes." |
And refusing to bake a cake for Trump voters is ok too I assume? Or fix their car or do their taxes? I don't think it is but it sounds like you feel differently about this kind of thing. |
I am the PP you mentioned. Don't get me wrong, I would think the baker was a straight up backwards loser for being so opposed to gay people. That's exactly why I wouldnt want them to bake my cake. I have no interest in having a backwards loser any part of my happy day |
This is all fine and good when you live in a more urban area where you can find people to bake your wedding cake, take your wedding photos, rent their wedding venues to you. And if you live in a rural area with only 2 bakers within driving distance and both of them refuse to bake your cake, and all the other vendors say no, then you're just screwed, I guess. And I guess this also gives license to Catholic bakers who want no part in baking a cake for a divorced Catholic getting remarried, because that is an offense to the sacrament of marriage. Or to a Muslim baker who doesn't believe in baking for a Jewish wedding. Y'all okay with those instances, right? To take it further, what about the married gay couple who can't find a pediatrician to take their son on as a patient because that would be condoning the "gay lifestyle" - where does this end? |
| He has fanned the flames of hate groups that are a threat to the LGBT community. He picked a VP that believes in conversion therapy. His list of potential SC nominees adds a layer of threats to the hard earned LGBT rights recently. |
I'm not a Trump voter, btw. Voted Hillary. I don't think they should refuse service to Trump voters, or Hillary voters, or gay people. But as far as the MESSAGE they print on the cakes... "I don’t want any business to discriminate against gay people. I wish the McArthurs would abandon their silly religious views and bake cakes for everyone. But freedom of religion must surely be respected alongside freedom of sexuality and, as a gay man, I vehemently support the Christian bakers’ right not to bake pro-gay cakes. Because one day, the prevailing political consensus may change again. Our lawmakers may once again be tempted to turn against gay people. And on that day, I hope the Christian bakers will stand by me in my fight to protect fundamental freedoms that transcend any cake, any religion and any daft law." http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/10/24/as-a-gay-man-im-horrified-that-christian-bakers-are-being-forced/ |

This is what Trump said at the RNC convention this summer. I guess people have forgotten.
Despite an RNC platform that is overwhelmingly anti-gay, Donald Trump in his speech on Thursday mentioned the Orlando massacre and said that he "will do everything in my power to protect our LGBTQ citizens from the violence and oppression of the hateful, foreign ideology, believe me," in reference to fundamentalist Islamic. The line was met with loud applause from the presumably conservative crowd and Trump noted, "I have to say, as a Republican, it is so nice to hear you cheering for what I just said, thank you." |
