That would explain the missing details regarding the man's appearance. And now there are other questions that come up - Why was she by herself? Why didn't anyone notice?

very sad indeed

But it's also scary knowing that the man could potentially still be around the area.

I don't think that's bet unusual at all. We have two kids with SN in our neighborhood and they are often around outside walking on their own.

Also, it happened between 7 and 8am. People are busy, hurrying to get to work, etc. I could see people just driving by and not paying attention. Things happen all the time in this area, I'm broad daylight without witnesses.

Agree that it's scary to think the guy is still around.

...and we haven't been told anything about him. No clue what color skin he has, if he's old or young, etc. And no clue where the incident happened ("near 108" isn't a location).

Maybe the girl wasn't able to provide a description so the cops are doing the best they can. I read that they are going to look through Sherwood HS security tapes. Hopefully something turns up.

Where did you read that?

I didn't hear about the tapes either. However, if they're going through the cameras then the girl was w/in the school's parameters. High schools certainly don't have cameras a mile away.

That info is coming from the local listserv. Apparently a cop allegedly told someone that the victim has SN (which, if true, the cop should not have done). This cop also allegedly said they are checking tapes (per the local listserv poster).

Still no additional info.

It's beyond bizarre that they haven't said where the incident took place or the skin color of the guy. If the girl had such serious special needs that she can't tell the difference between a white guy and a black guy, then why on earth was she walking to school alone?

Someone commented that there was extra police presence at obgc this weekend. Obgc is surrounded by woods. My gut tells me they are looking for a vagrant who camps in the area.

The limited information may be because the suspect is a minor.

Then why are they looking in the woods?

And the police release info on juvenile suspects all the time.

Something fishy.

Well I'm the poster who lives in the area. I agree that something is weird about the lack of details in the story. Maybe it was someone the girl new (but was still rape)?

At any rate, there has been an increase in police activity in the area so the police must have some suspicion that something happened. There were police cars by the elementary school and on a few of the roads around it yesterday. Even later into the evening/night.

Many times police purposely leave out details as a strategy.

Bah hum bug to strategies. How am I supposed to know what race to fear if they don't release the details!

Where else would you go to hide?

If it had been a minor, he could have run off into the woods.

It's going to end with the revelation that the girl skipped school and needed to cover up her absence or that she had a fling with a boy and made up the rape story.

I'm not a victim blamer, but I've spent my entire career working with kids. And I've seen and heard it all.

But I don't think the press release would casually include the word, rape, if there was any doubt. They could have easily said an assault.

The nosy pursuit of personally identifying information about the victim, the oafish armchair sleuthing, and the victim blaming throughout this thread exemplify the thinga that victims fear, which keep most victims from reporting. The flimsy guise of concern for public safety doesn't hide your abject curiosity. Congratulations. You have validated victims' sense that they will be disbelieved and have their privacy violated if they report a sex crime.

If you actually cared about the safety of your community, you'd be trying to make it a place where victims feel safe reporting.

A description came out:

http://www.mymcpnews.com/2016/09/20/update-detectives-continue-to-investigate-rape-of-teenager-in-sandy-spring-area-suspect-description-released/

Detectives from the Special Victims Investigations Division continue to investigate the Thursday, September 15 sexual assault of a teenager that occurred while she was walking in the Sandy Spring area. To protect the victim, the Department is not releasing the victim’s age. Additional information, to include the location of the rape and the suspect’s description, has been confirmed.

On September 15, officers were called to investigate the report of a sexual assault that had occurred between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. Detectives spoke with the victim, who reported that she was walking to school and was in the area of the 17800 block of Auburn Village Drive when she was grabbed from behind by a male. The suspect, using no words, directed the victim to a grassy area located off of the 17800 block of Auburn Village Drive. The suspect then raped the victim. The victim returned home and reported the assault to her parents. Police were notified of the assault and responded to the hospital where the victim was receiving medical treatment.

The suspect is described as a non-white male, possibly Hispanic, 5’05” to 5’07” tall, with an average build and black hair. He was wearing a black t-shirt and unknown color jeans.

Exactly. And you scum of the earth blaming the victim should be ashamed.

Nobody is blaming the victim or seeking info about her. Comments have been limited to seeking info on the location and description of the attacker...which we now have. No clue why it took so long to release the info.

And local parents are on edge. There was an incident at a bus stop the other day for the middle school where a person was photographing kids. No info has been released in terms of exactly where it happened or what the adult looks like...so, not helpful.
