There are many reasons why someone could be opposed to this:

- doesn't think taxpayers should pay for any elective surgery

- doesn't think convicted criminals should get elective surgery

- is angry about the crime he committed

- doesn't believe taxpayers should pay for surgery that an insurance company would not pay

- prejudice

The fact that you immediately leap to prejudice as the reason you perceive there to be opposition says more about your biases than it does about the opposition.

I'm not certain that there is any sympathy here, false or otherwise. More importantly, how can you conclude that its required for medically sound psychological reasons? Are you medically trained? Have you examined Manning or reviewed Manning's medical records?

Someone who doesn't believe the govt should pay for elective surgery can easily reach this conclusion without any medical knowledge. They wouldn't want the govt to pay for a nose job, boob job, face lift or any other elective surgery. For you to take your position, you either need medical knowledge or you believe this surgery is medically necessary in all cases, which even medically trained folks who perform these procedures do not.

If her medical team had not been able to find a licensed psychiatrist to sign off on a diagnosis that this surgery is NECESSARY for her mental well-being, then the procedure would not be going forward (which it is).

Today it was noted that Obama spent 1.3 trillion during this fiscal period and you just want to spend, spend, spend. Of course they can find someone to sign off on it! I'm confident that for the right amount of money I can get a doctor to write a note excusing me from work because I'm an alien who has not yet adjusted to earth's atmosphere. That a quack would sign a note is not the issue.

Exciting development! Chelsea has decided to request that Obama commute her sentence to time served.

It would still be six years that she has had to spend after suffering a conviction. So it's not like she's getting off "easy."

Not sure how this could affect the timing of her gender-affirming surgery.

For some reason, when the media reported on Chelsea's latest suicide attempt (which took place on October 4th), they didn't give much attention to his odd story that there are fake guards who are emotionally torturing him.

Some people chalk up this bizarre claim to hallucinations due to solitary confinement, but Chelsea says that he continued to see these fake guards around the prison after being back in the general population.
