Actually, according to a safe sex guide created by the Human Rights Campaign- the largest LGBT rights/lobbying organization- referring to Chelsea's genitalia as a "dick" is wrong. The correct term for the genitals of a transwoman who hasn't had surgery is "strapless," not dick or penis. The word dick refers to the external genitalia ("vulva") of female-to-male transmen. No one has elected the Human Rights Campaign, but as a lobbying organization with tens of millions of dollars, HRC has considerable influence on the politicians elected by the people. HRC also pours millions into electing certain candidates who will then have incentive to carry out HRC's wishes. They have significant input and influence on laws that are made concerning LGBT. So yes, like it or not, their opinion is more significant than many other people's because it's backed by money and power.
So, don't call a penis a vagina if you don't want to. But the media takes its cues and its wording from advocacy organizations. |
