Stop transgender kids

There's a difference between a trans adult and a child. And yes, I have discussed this with my friends of all genders and preferences. Maybe it's generational, but with the exception of my friends who live in liberal PC nw bubbles, most find the splintering into stereotypes to be absurd and not a good sign of the times

The ones in the PAC NW... Well, they are the ones talking a good talk about gender equality, while avoiding their neighborhood public schools, and all the poor people. Apples and oranges? Of course. But still not a representative sample of tolerance.

Again, I have no issue with adults making decisions about their bodies. I just think it is not a good idea to drug your teen with hormones. That is it. Allowing them to identify as they want? Sure. Allowing them to take drugs with irreversible side effects? No.

There's a front line documentary done pretty recently that follows the lives of a few teens and preteens going through this. In almost every case, they're living in pretty conservative place--and the choice to change genders seems to be a choice to conform to a set of tired feminine and masculine stereotypes. The girl born a boy wears pink, collects dolls. The boy born a girl likes short hair and skate boards. Both are taking puberty blockers, so as not to have any "bad" puberty effects.

Was it twenty years ago now that a family in Seattle ran into trouble because they wanted to block puberty for their disabled daughter? Now we've moved blocking puberty into the mainstream.

It is also worth noting that lupron is being given off label. That it can sterilize you. Cause bone loss. Diabetes. That it is no longer recommended for adult women.

All of this "progress" seems to be a tyranny of gender rigidity to me. All teens have body issues. The focus should be on self love, not on plastic surgery will fix all.

Exactly. And these girls are often having MASTECTOMIES, which are essentially irreversible, at the age of 18. I mean, can you imagine? Making that kind of life altering decision at that age? I am glad that this was not around when I was a young lesbian. I liked (and still like) to wear men's clothing (it's more comfortable, and I dont have to conform to the male gaze, and plenty of lesbians dress this way for those reasons, so it's kind of a calling card of your sexuality), and couldn't stand to do traditional "girl" stuff. I wonder if I would have had to go to gender counseling, and been told that I needed to accept my "real" gender. Cause I sure as hell didn't feel like a "girl".

It seems to me a kind of neoconservatism- girls like pink, boys like blue- if you dont like these things, we will change you to make it fit correctly. Because the idea of a GIRL with short hair, walking around in boy pants and a men's button down- THAT would be the real shocking thing, in most of these ultra conservative areas.

Think of Bruce Jenner- he's as conservative as they come. I think in a way, it was easier for him to say, "I was born the wrong gender" then to say "I am gay". Even today he says he doesn't know about gay marriage? Why? Because he doesnt have to anymore. If he wants to marry a man now, he's a "woman" and technically it will be traditional marriage.

It's really sad. I feel horrible and scared for our young, gendernonconforming gays and lesbians.

I don't know why you insist on projecting your experience as a lesbian onto people who are transgender. Of all people, you should know enough to butt out the hell out of other people's gender expression.

Splintering into stereotypes, yes, that's absurd. But splintering into stereotypes =/= gender identity.

If you don't think it's a good idea to drug your teen with hormones, then don't do it. Other people who are neither you nor your teen, who are in circumstances that are different from yours, may make different decisions.

Sexual orientation and gender identity are two different things. Perhaps you have heard this idea before? And gender conformity is yet a third thing.

Also, she's Caitlyn Jenner. It's polite to use the names and pronouns that people want you to use.

Yes, i have heard it before. But many people who reassign to another gender then pursue the "opposite gender" (aka, their previous gender).

And if you read these testimonials, plenty of the people are very conservative, living in conservative areas. And many of the "tip offs" they give as indicative of a misgendered child have to do with gender nonconformity.

So these things absolutely overlap and relate to each other. At the very least, we owe it to these children to understand how.

Actually, i don't know about that.

because now we have "lesbians" with penises underneath their dress. Trying to coerce other, actual lesbians into having sex with them, or even trying to trick them. Seriously.

Not only that, but we have men trying to barge into women's only spaces and LECTURE US on our experiences. Yes, people who grew up with male privilege and have a beard, but feel that "inside" they are a woman, a lesbian, are trying to tell US about what we go through, that we aren't oppressed compared to them.

It's bonkers. So I and plenty of other lesbians will absolutely be critical of what is happening. No dicks in my movement.

Oh, you're one of the "transgender women are men, because penis" people. You are what's in your pants. I don't define my identity as a woman by my genitalia, but if that's what you want to do, then you should do that.

I kind of agree with the PP. I think that there are probably some kids who really should be reassigned but there are probably also some kids who could have been happy, if accepted, in their original gender but liking nontraditional things. And some kids would outgrow it. As a parent, I would have no problem calling you a different gender nickname or letting you dress as you wish, but I would do nothing permanent or with side effects.

The sad thing is, there are plenty of dicks, (both real and virtual and who the fuck cares which) who will call you a murdering terf and threaten you for daring to express that opinion. I wouldn't have believed this, until I was chastised on my college alumni facebook group for pointing out that a medical doctor might have different examinations for someone with a prostate than someone with a uterus. Apparently, to these people, me reminding them they didn't actually have a uterus was triggering. I wish to fuck I was kidding, because women have real reproductive issues and I will be damned if I let a bunch of fringe opinions ignore them... because, "triggers."

On the other side of the fence, there was a gender queer person, who was outraged! that a security guard and their college's gym was concerned when they chose to group shower with a bunch of cis men. The security guard was concerned for their welfare, but apparently that concern was a microaggression, because it was all totes cool, and they were just one of the guys.

I am someone who has had relationships with both genders. I don't give a shit who identifies with what, or where zhee pees. But the insane level of reactionary effort in the movement now is so far out of proportion to reality that I think it needs to be addressed. Don't drug teenages. Don't give teenagers masectomies. Don't give them anything that affects their fertility. Hell, HRT is off the table for us menopausal women, but you think it's suddenly okay for a 17 year old?

Another thing that happened on my facebook feed, which I guess is my window into the youngs perspective on this... was someone posted about the "looks" they got shopping in the men's section. I know, kids. They want to push boundaries, be transgressive, have attention, be special. But the creepy and sad thing is, I remember shopping in the men's section in 1984. While wearing boxers. And there was nothing transgressive or particularly eyebrow raising about it then. Nor was it a political statement. As a girl, I was "allowed" to have short hair and wear mens shirts. Sometimes ties and blazers. (This might have been a 1984 thing, I am sure some of you recall.) I also grew up in the seventies playing with toys that were almost NEVER pink. That were trucks. And gender neutral. And listening to Free to Be You and Me.

We've taken steps backwards since then. All of this gender acceptance is creepy gender conformity and it is fucked up.

Is there something in your gender that can't accept anyone disagreeing with you? Any narrative that doesn't match your own? Well then, sweetness, life will be full of lemons. I wish you the best.
