Our society is seriously fed up when a woman feels she HAS to wear feet-damaging shoes to feel special. I feel all kinds of special in my Walmart flip flops, because I know my worth isn't measured in how much pain my feet are in.

This! Before I even got to past your title my first thought was - Asian ladies or, and more likely Latin American ladies. FWIW, I lived in Southeast Asia for a long time and my favorite travel destinations (before I got boring and had kids) were places in S. America- so my thoughts weren't of the disparaging variety just that's what my mind thought immediately as a picture before even reading.

I wouldn't necessarily say its more "stylish" or fashionable, its just preference. I mean a lot of heels I see are way, way unfashionable but I know that for some women ANY heel is more fashionable than flats because that's what they see as fashion, particularly if its cultural.

+1. Some people are so over the top. Measuring worth by shoes? No one said that, some people just prefer wearing heels. All of mine are super comfortable, and I'd never wear shoes that hurt my feet. That applies to heels or flats.

Perhaps you should do a little research on how bad flip flops are for you. Some say it's worse than heels.

Yes, this is one aspect of the DC area I had to get used to once I moved here (well, among others...) Lots of small asian women wearing lucite stripper heels taking care of their kids. Just like OP, I am not kidding. I don't get it, but assume it must be cultural?

I know friends, who are from different cultures, want to dress "sexy" for their husbands all the time. Sort of like the anti-burka.

I wear heels everywhere except the gym and the beach. I'm short and I hate not being in heels, it's just part of me feeling put together. I don't wear heels that hurt my feet and I've never fallen. Not even when holding an infant or running after toddler. Oddly enough, my feet actually hurt if I wear sneakers or flip flops too long.

Really? Insulting my intelligence because of my choice in shoes? You must not have read the part of my post that says I don't wear uncomfortable shoes. If you get quality shoes that fit well, you can avoid a lot of issues.

BTW...my grandmother is 90 and still wears heels a few times a week. She seems to be doing just fine.

It's also funny because heels are pretty much out now. Flats have been having their moment for years now, and now pairing sneakers with your outfit is considered to be the height of fashion. For a while it was those Isabel Marant sneakers witha lift in them, now it's just regular (high end, obvi) sneakers.

So I have to laugh when I see women tottering around in heels. It just seems so.... 1970s Vanna White.

It makes me wonder, do they know it’s not good for their feet, spine and posture?? Some may, some may not. Some will probably go with the “no pain no gain” theory, but I choose comfort above all else!
