Mixed race family here living in Burtonsville. We have quite a diverse street: mixed race families, Latino families, AA families, white families, and at least one lesbian couple. MoCo schools--though not greatest ones. You can get quite a bit of house/ land for your money. My husband commutes to Bethesda daily.

I'm finding the Burtonsville area interesting--did this used to be the Montgomery County part of Laurel?

Burtonsville was never a part of Laurel.

I do have a couple of dear friends in Howard County who have great things to say about the schools there.

Grew up in PG and would absolutely not recommend it. Terrible schools for one. Secondly, it's not very diverse unless you consider mostly AA with a sprinkling of low income whites and a small filipino enclave as diverse.

Howard County is NOT diverse. It has just as many white people as PG County has black people. Living in a mostly white county does not make it diverse. Also I think Howard County is to far from Bethesda. It's a bit country also but some people like that.

To Get Demographics of a neighborhood, get the information for elementary schools in Schools-at-a-glance

http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/sharedaccountability/glance/

http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/regulatoryaccountability/glance/currentyear/schools/02770.pdf

This link is to Flora Singer ES. You can tell the percent of each race with this. You will have to pick out the actual names of elementary schools because it is by name, not city. But there are other ways to get names of ES in Silver Spring (or wherever).

This doesn't tell you the makeup of the neighbor, but if most of the children go to the public school, it gets pretty close. But there are some districts where most of the local children go to religious school, so the demographics of the school will not represent the neighborhood. Kemp Mill comes to mind.

There are many diverse ES in Silver Spring, and probably other places in Montgomery County.

Thanks! I think I'm confused, not sure why I thought Laurel was Burtonsville.

Schools are fantastic (FFX Co has some of the best in the country), and the commute to Bethesda is pretty easy. Not walkable though, which I don't like. The budget may not fit unless you're willing to look at townhouses?

We're a mixed race family and highly considering McLean. How have the neighbors treated you? While our family may be different as an interracial family, we're looking to find an area that will treat us as if we belong. Have you felt welcomed and, more importantly, have your children been able to keep and make friends? TIA

Hi-

Interracial family here. Kids have no problem. We have no problems. We're in Langley Oaks. Can't say it's terribly diverse on our street, but everyone is super friendly. There is also another interracial couple somewhere in the neighborhood (I've seen them walking a dog), but they're significantly older so I don't really know them. McLean is full of Arabs, Persians, Koreans, Indians and other assorted non-white looking people, so they're really not too concerned with your kids not being white. At least that's our experience. Or I should say the kids' experience.

Burtonsville sort of borders the North and West part of Laurel so that is probably what you were thinking.

Baloney. Columbia was a planned community that was designed with diversity in mind.

Howard - 57% non-Hispanic white; 18% black; 16% Asian; 6% Hispanic. PG - 65% black; 16% Hispanic; 14% non-Hispanic white; 4% Asian.

Howard is more diverse than PG.

Hey, hey. I'm AA from Howard County. Columbia is VERY diverse. Western Howard County (where I'm from) is not as diverse, but you would be surprised at how diverse it has become.

So which areas in Howard County would you recommend? Columbia, but anywhere else?

I used to attend a large non-denominational church in Columbia. It was VERY diverse. Howard is where a lot of upper income blacks from Baltimore fled too. I know others that moved there from both PG and Montgomery. Most are in Columbia.
Howard is very expensive but I know a few in Ellicott City also.
