Mayor Bowser to Make Education Policy and Personnel Announcement - Boundary Decision?

Anonymous
Now asking if she agrees with the new marijuana law.

To me, the big question here is whether or not this MS grandfathering applies to all re-assigned MSs, including, for example, Eaton. Or, as the Post article suggests, it more narrowly applies to the Ward 4 neighborhoods that were cut from Deal, namely Crestwood and 16th st heights.

Wow, congrats to Crestwood!

Do you mean 16th St Heights rather than Crestwood? They're talking about West now feeding to Deals, right? So, are they going to start busing the lucky ducks who are now an hour walk away from school instead of 20mn?

Answer appears to be yes, she is ok with it.

Is she really allowed to do that? Isn't expansion of the grandfather period like that a substantive change that needs to be announced a year in advance? Otherwise, she could just change the plan willy-nilly whenever she wants simply by calling any changes a targeted set of grandfather tweaks.

Need input from someone who knows the regs better.

The relevant law specifically says "boundary" changes. Theoretically, she could change entire feeder patterns without notice.

Still talking about weed. Kinda annoyed these reporters are focusing on this instead of schools...

No, they are not talking about changing feeders. They are talking about extending a grandfathering. West will not feed to Deal.

Am I the only one actually watching/listening to this?

Jeff, what's the law? Do you have a link or citation, so I can read it myself? TIA

Agreed. And then Relisha Rudd, and now trash collection delays.

Yep:

just ended though.

as I wrote above, big remaining question is, does this affect Eaton. Other than that, it is all as the Post article reported.

Yes, there needs to be clarification on this because there could be serious impacts. For example, the Stoddert Elem northern boundary has been shifted and there are now a few blocks that will feed to Eaton rather than Stoddert. So, starting next school year, families not yet enrolled at Stoddert will now attend Eaton. However, families currently enrolled in Stoddert (and younger siblings perhaps not yet school age) are entitled to stay at Stoddert through 5th grade via grandfathering. However, if I was a Stoddert family living in those blocks rerouted to Eaton, I might seriously consider leaving Stoddert and going to Eaton instead because now I might have access to Deal. And the way the boundary decisions were written, those families DO have the choice between Stoddert (their current school) and Eaton (their new by-right school). I really hope the mayor thought through the impact of this decision.

Well, if you were to fully get behind the new MacFarland middle school to help make it awesome then you would likely decrease the pressure on Deal.

some of us with West as our IB school have also had feeder rights to Deal all along. What happens to us? that would seem to be considered grandfathering to me.

I predict the enrollment paperwork process this spring will be crazy with all sorts of families registering for Deal and then finding out on the first day of school that they can't attend.
