http://naturallysavvy.com/eat/13-foods-you-probably-didn-t-know-contain-msg Boars Head luncheon meats #7 on the 13 foods you probably didn't know contain msg |
Op here. Really?!?! Do they have to disclose the msg? They did not online or in anything I read. I thought something like that would have to be disclosed? |
|
And apples contain arsenic.
The luncheon meat is FINE. It's not like your kid is eating a pound of it at a sitting. |
They lobbied to have the word "Natural" include several variations of MSG such as hydrolyzed vegetable protein, textured vegetable protein and yeast extract. They also lobbied to get it approved to label High Fructose Corn Syrup "Corn Sugar". |
Apples contain organic arsenic, which is harmless. Do you think it is FINE to feed your 13mo chinese food with MSG? Boars Head is one of the healthier luncheon meats, but it is not "healthy" especially for a 13mo. |

Ugh this is awful news. DS is 14 months and I've given him deli meats (turkey and ham) cut at the deli counter - not prepackaged although I'm not sure that matters, so OP you're not the only one. I was worried about preservatives, chemicals, etc and now I feel bad I've given it to him.
For those who don't, what do you use for sandwiches? Deli meat is just so convenient. I've cooked and cut up checked breast but that's not as easy to put in a sandwich. Or do you not make sandwiches? |
| ^^ obviously that should be chicken breast haha, not checked |
Yes, I think it is fine to feed my 13 mo old Chinese food with MSG once in a while--but Chinese restaurants we've been to claim no MSG. But, I also am a parent who thinks it's fine for my kid to have juice at parties and Doritos at the Super Bowl party and ice cream daily during the summer. I don't disallow a food if my children show interest in it, but will moderate its consumption. I've also never been on a diet, completely eliminated a particular category of food, or been remotely overweight. We cook at home most nights, eat a lot of fruit and veggies, and enjoy cuisines from all cultures. FWIW, my father is French and my mother is Korean, so I grew up with a very different understanding of food than most mothers I meet here. There are a lot of DCUM mothers out there who are too controlling about food to the point of creating unnecessary stress over what should be a pleasurable part of life and, ultimately, making eating a fraught moral exercise for their children. I would not be surprised to learn that many of these mothers struggled with eating disorders and dieting at some point, or will have children who will have those struggles. |

Op here. I grew up on TV dinners and McDonald's as a kid...both my parents worked incredibly long hours and it is what it is...and I'm fine, lol!
I'm trying to do the best I can for DD but like pp said sometimes you need an f-ing break! And lunch meat was what I thought would be great. I think I'm going to look more into the natural brands and retry the applewood in a ham or something to see if DD would like that instead of the turkey. Like the immediate pp said, I don't want to be controlling or crazy with this. I grew up with no restrictions and ended up never liking soda or sweets. So I want to give my DD variety without going over the top about nutrition but at the same time I would like to avoid hormones and things that are completely unnecessary. I got some great info in this thread and truly appreciate all the feedback and suggestions! |
That lady is nuts. |
| OP I'm the tuna poster. You could try canned salmon instead. I mix it up like a crabcake with an egg and some breadcrumbs, and sautee. |
This is the worst suggestion ever. They are terrible nutritionally. |
You have no sense of humor. |
