Sooo....my DD likes lunch meat....question

Anonymous
FTM here and I have a 12mo DD. We cannot have grains due to allergy issues so we are gluten and grain free as of now.

My DH gave DD a taste of his Boars Head turkey lunch meat and she LOVED IT! We are always looking for things to add to her menu of items but I know lunch meat is not good because of all the preservatives. We have tried the organic turkey and she hates it. Its really game-y tasting.

Is it really bad to give them deli meat from the deli or what would you suggest?

Thanks!

Just chicken or just turkey from trader joes? It's a package of roasted meat. Tastes good cold and by itself. I learned about it here at DCUM!

OP here...thanks for the suggestion I will certainly look into it! However, it would be awesome to avoid having to go to another grocery store for just deli meat. I guess I wanted to know more about meat sliced at the deli in general and if there were healthier brands than others?

We give our preschoolers lunchmeat and have since they were about 18 months. I just buy either the Hormel Natural Choice or Applegate brands which are both preservative, gluten and nitrate-free.

Try Lunchables. They're very popular.

And you can find the Hormel Natural Choice line (red cardboad box) at almost any grocery. Near me, Safeway, SFW, Giant, Harris Teeter and Walmart all carry this line. Applegate is harder to find and at Safeway and Harris Teeter.

OP here. Thanks for letting me know. Actually, we tried the applegate one and she hated it...and I cannot blame her. Maybe it was what I bought but the oven roasted turkey was very squishy and game-y, lol. I will look out for the hormel brand as we go to the Giant.

Can you get a rotisserie chicken and then avoid the deli meat altogether?

OP here. Oh I cook her meat...chicken and turkey (she prefers ground due to texture) but it would be nice to have a break from that and give her more variety in the texture department. She wont do shredded meat for some reason yet.

I will look into the Applegate ham and see if that better.

Boars Head is fantastic. Their meats and cheeses contain no fillers, gluten, artificial colors, flavors or trans fat. If you are going to eat deli meat, Boars Head is the way to go. I was a certified Boars Head Deli Specialist. Days of training by Boars Head when I worked for Publix. I learned more about Deli meat than I ever needed to know.

Where do you shop now?

Walmart sells Old World Style Black Forest ham, smoked ham. It is very good and I am not a frequent ham eater so for me to recommend this is telling.

Very thin. You can repackage it into smaller bags and freeze. That's what I do.

PP again. This is what we get 90% of the time. My kids love the smoked ham, the oven roasted turkey and the hard salami. I started getting this because it was easier to find than the Applegate. Now they actually prefer this to the Applegate (and it's cheaper). So we always have this around.
