Coates ES: Got the pool letter albeit couple of days later "in snail mail" ! |
Why would they do this? Clearly the kid's on the bubble anyway. |
There's always one. |
| I have so many things I wonder but am afraid to ask people I know IRL. Like is it really some horrible stain NOT to be in the AAP. I just kind of don't get how it's not truly a gifted program and they let so many in, and yet, there are still kids NOT in who are "really bright"...I mean, what is it, really? Is it a big setback for a child NOT to be in it? How hard should someone lobby? And what kind of work samples do they like? It all just seems so subjective other than the test score. I almost wished it was either you make it or you don't with the test scores, but our AART said at the presentation that even if you make the pool you might not get in. |

We got a CogAt test result in our son's backpack today along with the letter stating that he is in the pool and also the letter from fcps explaining about the CogAt test. Three papers were stapled together.
Our son got: Verbal 111 Quantitative 124 Nonverbal 123 Composite (VQN) 122 (92 age percentile, 77 local percentile) I know his score is below 132 composite requirement for AAP pool. But, he got 135 on NNAT test last year. So, we believe he made it to the pool because of NNAT result. Chances for my son to get into AAP might be very slim, but when I heard about GBRS (gifted behaviors rating scale) will be included for a screening file, we started to wonder how much difference it could possibly make. Either way, we are very happy that he even made it into the pool. We wouldn't be disappointed even if he couldn't go to class IV AAP. We at least know that he will be fine in his current school. GL everyone! |

Mcnair elementary school. Got DS score and in pool letter together by mail yesterday.
Composite: 136. He is new to fairfax county, so he don't have a NNAT score. In his report card, he got 4s in math, history and science and 3s in everything else. Not sure whether he can make it to AAP. |
Don't sweat his grades. My kid was getting 2s in some subjects. High test scores on NNAT and CogAT, average GBRS.... got in and is doing quite well. A composite CogAT of 136 is good and I would bet is an admit. |
There's a difference between the potentially gifted child and the "has good grades" child. What the screening process is trying to find is the potentially gifted child. There was an AAP conference back in 2013 where the conference materials are all posted on the FCPS website. The materials are here: http://www.fcps.edu/is/aap/parents/sessions.shtml There is a roughly hour-long video of the AAP identification process at the link "Central Screening and Selection" which might be helpful for you to view -- here's a direct link to the video: http://www.ebmcdn.net/fcps/fcps_video_viewer.php?viewnode=041a17f0d08ce |
