I have so many things I wonder but am afraid to ask people I know IRL. Like is it really some horrible stain NOT to be in the AAP. I just kind of don't get how it's not truly a gifted program and they let so many in, and yet, there are still kids NOT in who are "really bright"...I mean, what is it, really? Is it a big setback for a child NOT to be in it? How hard should someone lobby? And what kind of work samples do they like? It all just seems so subjective other than the test score. I almost wished it was either you make it or you don't with the test scores, but our AART said at the presentation that even if you make the pool you might not get in.
There's a difference between the potentially gifted child and the "has good grades" child. What the screening process is trying to find is the potentially gifted child. There was an AAP conference back in 2013 where the conference materials are all posted on the FCPS website. The materials are here: http://www.fcps.edu/is/aap/parents/sessions.shtml There is a roughly hour-long video of the AAP identification process at the link "Central Screening and Selection" which might be helpful for you to view -- here's a direct link to the video: http://www.ebmcdn.net/fcps/fcps_video_viewer.php?viewnode=041a17f0d08ce
