Obese, but going to lose weight starting 1/1/2015

I've hated any kind of exercise all my life. I started walking/running about a year ago and have lost 30 lbs. Since it's gotten cold, and I'm sick of the treadmill, I started water aerobics 4x/week. OMG, I've finally found an exercise I LOVE! You get a great cardio workout and if you use a couple tricks/tools (water weights/resistance bands/etc.), you also get a great strength workout!

Yes, because that's the only way, EVER. It's a success story every time, too!

OP, I'm so happy for you! Keep up the good work. I've been lacking the motivation but you're inspiring me! My gym membership has been on hold and my fitbit is gathering dust. I'm charging it back up right now and unfreezing my membership this week.

Tricky things: not eating after 7. For example, it's 10:30 now and I'm hungry. I brushed my teeth and am having some ice water, but... I'll probably go to bed soon.

Herbal tea!

How's it going with the Fitbit? I found the first month that I wasn't really motivated by it. I used it mostly as a data collection tool to see how much I was moving in a typical week, and the results were pretty humbling. Basically, I was much more sedentary than I realized.

But after a month of watching the numbers with no motivation to change my behavior, I finally engaged with it. I set a more modest goal of 7,500 steps a day at first, and then ramped up to 10,000 when 7,500 started feeling like a given. I'm now thinking about ramping up further to 12,000. Anyway, I now find all sorts of ways to add more steps to my day. Small things like walking around the block when I have a bit of downtime at work to larger things like getting into a routine (finally!) of walking 3-4 days a week for an hour at a time either on the treadmill or outside if the weather is decent. Once I engaged, the feedback from Fitbit about my steps became surprisingly motivating.

Fitbit is a good motivator if you have friends who are also on it. If you are competitive it can really be a motivator to try and top your friend's step count. I also like the integration into other apps like Lose It which helps control my calorie intake.

Anonymous wrote:OP here. I am GOOD! Since I started, I have lost 7 pounds, and my energy level is already much higher. I am incorporating some basic muscle-building activities (push ups, planks, lunges, etc.) into my daily walks, and I seem to be getting stronger already. Not anything miraculous, but like I said, I'm playing a long game here.

Thanks for nudging me!

Keep it up! I'm rooting for you. I have 25 pounds to lose. I'm already very active but I'm menopausal so I need diet-related motivation. Keep telling yourself marathon, not a sprint.

Quick update: Down 10 pounds, and can do 7 more pushups in a minute than I could when I started! Progress.

Awesome job, OP!!! I remember seeing those awesome losses, and how good and motivating they felt. Just wait until you have to buy smaller clothing; for me, after years of only going UP in clothing sizes, being forced to buy smaller clothing was pretty much the most amazing feeling ever! Won't be long for you now, you're on your way!

Super big congrats. I'm really excited for you.

Thank you for the updates Op - this is such an awesome thread. 21 days in and you are already seeing results. That is inspiring and it gives the rest of us hope that we, too, can do it.

You have helped to inspire me to get back on track, too. What on earth was I waiting for?? I don't know! Thank you!

Good! I'm down 15 pounds so far this year. I tweaked my ankle (I thought running was something that should come naturally!), but I didn't let that stop me from exercising. I did a 21-day primal challenge that helped me get my meals on track. I'm not exclusively primal, but my eating habits are much better than they were.

So far, so good! Thanks for checking on me!
