This is what I would consider ugly/ill designed

Whereas I don't mind this one so much.

Funny - both are strapless, show the same amount of cleavage and the same amount of leg.

The pper of those links here -- this is my point. They both show lots of skin, but I think the blue one is just ugly and cheap looking whereas I don't mind the black one. My point is that I personally don't care about skin, I care about how the dress ultimately looks, as a parent.

Yeah, is it the color that made it more acceptable?

Neither of those dresses are as short as the dresses I saw. All the dresses are short, but then there are some where everybody feels as though they have to divert their eyes.

The other things is these models are sticks. If you put the same dress on other girls, the dress will be shorter, especially in the back to go over their boot. Girls with bigger boobs can't and shouldn't wear strapless but they do. For teens, it just looks wrong.

It is not about sex per se but the notion of what they want others to think of them. Girls dress like this for a reason. Parents should be helping them, not just saying "oh she is 15 so she can dress anyway she wants." That is being a friend, not a parent. And we have a lot of problems with that these days.

Actually, girls dress like this for many reasons.

But ok, let's take your reason -- they dress that way to attract male attention. Is it bad for a high school girl to dress for attracting male attention? And if so, why?

new pp - maybe so they don't look like a ho?

So it's bad for high school girls to dress for attracting male attention, because people who dress for attracting male attention look like people who charge money for sex? Is that what you're saying?

I think advertising the goods is way different than wanted to talk to some boys.

not PP but there is a difference in wanting to look nice and wanting to look provocative. Why can't you see that?

All right, then let's back up. Why do you think that the girls are wanting to wear these dresses that OP so disapproves of?

It's just a bad decision, plain and simple. Just like the million others they will make over the 4 years of HS. I get some girls change their clothes once they get to school but these moms are posting pictures on FB.

It's like asking why do kids not wear bike helmet... because their parents don't make them.

No, I don't think that answers the question.

However, it does raise a different question: why is wearing one of those dresses a bad decision, similar to not wearing a bike helmet?

Oh who cares? It's a dance. Let them wear what they want.

Because when 1 lame parent does not require a bike helmet all the kids ask "why do I have to wear one" and the smart/responsible/normal parents have to be the bad guys. If you noticed many kids were dressed fine. But you also will see the moms bemoaning what an issue it is to get to a 1/2 decent dress.

Dang one mom is taking pictures of her daughters butt to prove to her it does not look great back there. Applause from this mom.

I personally don't care... you are wearing a helmet AND you ass will NOT hang out of your shorts AND your dress will not be a coochie cutter... I have no problem being the "bad guy".

Not this poster, but also would be interested in an answer to this question. If this becomes the latest fashion in certain circles for prom this year, should it be viewed as an acceptable personal choice -- while perhaps on one end of the spectrum, it is still merely one choice in the spectrum of choices of self-expression that should not be stymied by parental interference? When it comes to a teenager's personal choice of what to wear, is there any line that should not be crossed?
