I don't have a HS student, but I always find claims like this interesting, because all the sources I read say that teens are actually having less sex these days--rates have dropped steadily since 1988 (when many of us were teens).

Even Fox says so!

You realize the study says that 72% of teens are having sex instead of 78%. So 7 out of the 10 girls are having sex. You think that is low?

Nope, not low, but lower than my generation.

71% of 19-year-olds, 61% of 18-year-olds, 48% of 17-year-olds, 33% of 16-year-olds, 20% of 15-year-olds, 11% of 14-year-olds, 5% of 13-year-olds, 2% of 12-year-olds.

Am I going to panic about this? Nope.

But thanks for making the point that the "OMG! Slutty dresses!" stuff is really about teenage girls having sex.

NP here but I absolutely do think dressing like that takes away from a woman. I honestly do. And you can say you don't but it is a stereotype like the rest of society. Man with baggy pants and wife beater walks into gas station and you get nervous. Not the man in the suit. A man sees a teenaged girl dressed in low cut mini dress with stilettos and they aren't thinking, wow she sure is a smart nice girl I would like to get to know. They are thinking one thing only.

I think that people thinking that a human being has less value when dressed in certain clothes is a much bigger problem than teenage girls in short tight dresses.

Also, girls and women are not responsible for men's thoughts, and girls and women are not responsible for men's actions. Who is responsible? The men, themselves.

Oh dear lord. Are you really saying no one judges a book by it's cover? Why in the world do you think girls dress like that? They want to be looked at and desired. It isn't like the 4 inch heels and skin tight mini is a comfy outfit they wear at home watching TV. I mean seriously enough already. You want your kids to dress that way fine. But you can not force others to think your way.

This

It is not about sex per say but the notion of what they want others to think of them. Girls dress like this for a reason. Parents should be helping them, not just saying "oh she is 15 so she can dress anyway she wants." That is being a friend, not a parent. And we have a lot of problems with that these days.

You're wrong on several levels. Most egregiously, you bash another pp for doing exactly what you proceed to do. Guess what? Not everyone dresses "to be looked at and desired." Maybe it's just you or your DD. It's certainly not me or my DD. And comparing a homecoming dance outfit to tv-watching clothes is just stupid. You were right about one thing: You can't force others to think your way. So stop.

Actually, girls dress like this for many reasons.

But ok, let's take your reason -- they dress that way to attract male attention. Is it bad for a high school girl to dress for attracting male attention? And if so, why?

1 out of 10 that have not completely gone through puberty, 1 out of 3 that are sophomores or juniors. 1/2 that are juniors/seniors, 2/3 + senior year.

This does not even count BJ's which are apparently "not sex".

Parent your kids please. Being aware and going to "panic" are very different.

It is very hard to get a date to prom when you have slept with all their friends. You can get a date, but for all the wrong reasons.

Wait, are we talking about people having sex? I thought we were talking about dresses.

Okay then, can you give us all the other reasons 15yr old girls where dresses that barely cover their ass-cheeks, push up bras with plunging neckline and stilettos for a school dance? I am honestly curious. Because that sure doesn't seem like an outfit you can dance in, let alone walk, sit, etc...

^wear, not where

Because they think it looks cute.
Because that's what their friends are wearing.
Because it makes them feel grown-up.
Because it shocks the grown-ups.

Were you never a 15-year-old girl, PP?

This is what I would consider ugly/ill designed

Whereas I don't mind this one so much.

Funny - both are strapless, show the same amount of cleavage and the same amount of leg.

One has a zipper all the way down the back and it's label is "Teeze Me." Interesting...

No, that's Cheezie. (at least to me)

My daughter is tall and has long legs. She's also athletic. Basically, she's got a great body. As long as her butt won't show, I don't mind her wearing a short dress. I told her you either show off cleavage or leg but not both. She chose to show off her legs. I made her jump up with her hands over her head both facing me and facing away from me in dressing rooms. Then I had her bend over as if writing something leaning on a table, and I took a picture of her ass and showed it to her and said "are you really comfortable showing this much?" It turned out to be a brilliant idea - she picked a dress two inches longer because of that pic.

But she's got a great body, knows it, and dresses for it. She likes how she looks in the shorter dresses. There is zero correlation between skimpiness of dress and having sex.

I'm sorry, but it sounds like you're living through your daughter.

Lol, nope. I'm also tall with long legs and athletic.

Buying HC dresses is a PITA for the moms. The dresses are either: too old, too slutty, too tight, too short, or too much boob. Finding a good one is very hard. Especially on a budget.

LOL - the first two are what 15yr old girls SAY to get their parents to allow them to dress that way.
