If only he'd come east of the river.

IT parent here. Some of the pics of the kids at the White House were from YMCA summer camps that happen to have many IT kids attend. Pic with Obama was not expected. Students were visiting the WH for a healthy kids initiative (with no expectation to meet the president). The day was rained out and they were brought indoors and had an improv meeting with the President. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a VIP there tomorrow but honestly I would try not to be too upset about it. I also have to take a few hours off of work since aftercare is limited. I know it's not the same, but we're all in this together. We have been through hell the last four years from being a minority tenant to losing a promised DCPS building. At the end of the day all of our children are going to have a nice new playground to use where a large donation came from the parents/IFA from Inspired. Let's be good neighbors and not tear eachother apart.

Sorry but IT ISN'T being a "good neighbor" by priortizing a VIP visit over another school's right to hold classes on a regular school day. All jokes aside there will be several kids who won't have a lunch tomorrow, which is often times their only definite meal that day. Is it worth a FLOTUS visit that much knowing that? Your school's leadership thinks so...
As a Lee parent I'm grateful for the new playground but there's absolutely no need for the pomp & circumstance which affects 90+ kids. Thank you for the donations for the amazing playground. We are grateful, really. We are NOT grateful for being cast-out for your schools bragging rights. And if roles were reversed (your kid getting kicked out at 11:45 vs 5pm I do believe you might be a little pissed off too. So, please let us vent and joke about calling Fox News and our kids going a day without quinoa. It's all we get.

Not Lee or IT parent but you Lee families need to take a chill pill. Really, the worst thing you have to complain about in a brand new building the first year is getting an early release day to make room for a new playground? Really? Lord, I am fearing the new Lee families will turn into the new bitchy YY parents.

It is unnecessary to kick us out. And there are several families there for whom this will be a real hardship (not everyone works salaried jobs). And we are paying you rent to use your playground, so, no I am not grateful.

How do you know it's unnecessary? Do you think the school would close if it were really unnecessary? Why also close aftercare. Do you really think the evil admin at the school sit and figure how to make people's lives miserable?

IF IT can be there why can't Lee? Because IT doesn't want to share?

Whether it's VIP or heavy equipment, that entrance is going to be blocked after noon. It's either a secrecy service area that has to be blocked or equipment. But why on earth would hey close aftercare at IT too? If VIP it's a security concern. If the playground were in the IT side I'm sure it would be them closing. If it's planned VIP they would have had build day Wednesday and visit Thursday. A large % of school depends on aftercare until 6:30, they would not unnecessarily close either school or aftercare if they can help it.

Share? What is this preschool? Are you mad about half day or are you mad about not being invited to an off chance of a VIP sighting?

The 1/3 day. I have a big report due so no time for off chance VIP sightings, but also no time chase a preschooler around, hence the grumblings.

Lee parent here who has done a fair share of grumbling to my spouse, who thankfully is able to take a half day. Just wanted to say that most of us are not blaming its or Lee admins, but just rolling with it best we can.

My partner will miss an opportunity to work today. No work= no wages.

Playground is on Fox News. They're spotlighting it for day of service celebrations. ITs new playground looks good.

It's pretty despicable that students are being forced to stay home so a school can showcase its property, or highlight one school at a detriment to the other.

I am not a parent at either school so I don't know - was the closure on the formal calendar, or announced spur of the moment? If the later, that is TRULY despicable. I would be furious at the inconvenience to (Lee) parents and disregard for the kids. Not a way to treat an incubator school!

If you don't know the whole story please stop commenting. The playground is being built in the Lee side of the school. Workers will be taking a break during Lee's dismissal to make it less chaotic and avoid safety issues. Has NOTHING to do with showcasing one school vs the other (even though that build is sponsored by IT). If the playground were being built on ITS side, they would be closing early.

Huh? I thought most of this thread was speculation about a VIP visit?

If you don't want people who aren't part of your school community commenting on a thread, I suggest you don't post about your school on a public message board, where many parents who entertain attending the school frequent. Please!

PP, I think you are right that this is a media event. POTUS and/or FLOTUS are expected to attend at some point later today. Military volunteers have been recruited for the staged media and photo opps for 9/11 service day. They will need to put the low income IT students in there too as background props.
Anonymous
Sorry, this is not about IT. It's all about KaBoom! and Corp. for National Service. They are the masterminds behind the event and the press coverage. But let's remember that more than 200 people are out there volunteering in a DC community. Definitely something we should be hope our kids can learn from and emulate in their lives.

Do we actually know who the VIP is? Speaking of missing work, wondering if it is worth missing work for...
Anonymous
Lee parent here-- while annoyed, I appreciate the grant work that I'm sure went into making the Kaboom playground happen and look forward to sharing the space. (And I like seeing the little guys peeking out the window in the background).
