Boundary Cheaters

This is a huge red flag that warrants focused investigation.

I think it's a real shame for the child, if s/he lives out of state, because it's hard to make friends that can be seen out of school, or else the parents will be found out. At least in elementary school, the OOB parents that are DC residents tend to be real friendly, just like everyone else, while the potential cheaters are standoffish and elusive -- drop off and run, quick! Everyone sees the MD plates. After elementary school, the parents tend to know one another less, but it's still going to be difficult for a cheater's child to be close with a D.C. resident.

At our HRC, a lot of parents hire sitters/caretakers/drivers for before and after school care, chaperoning, etc. Sometimes, these folks have non-DC tags.

The parents with MD tags looked like parents, not caregivers.

Non-DC tags don't constitute full proof, but when a child routinely arrives or leaves in a MD or VA car the school needs to look into the situation more closely. It's a shame to be changing school boundaries and allocating scarce resources based on faulty enrollment figures that include non- resident cheaters in DCPS (and charters).

I have to pass by Stuart Hobson on my way to work every morning and every day I see parents in cars with Maryland tags dropping their kids off. And yes, it's clear they are the parents.

And yet the DCPS refused to support extending feeder rights to Brent because SH couldn't accommodate even another handful of students. Let the Cluster death spiral continue.

I asked Charles Allen about Stuart Hobson cheaters at a meet and greet a few months back. If parents care about being shut out and about neighborhood schools, we need to continue to ask questions of people running for office.

-Nanny/babysitter/carpool with the driver being from Md.
-Lazy parents: move from Md to DC, too lazy to actually change registration.
-Split home: mom has primary custody of kids, but dad drops kids off on Mondays/ picks up on Friday (etc)
-Relitives: grandma decides to drop grand kids off once and a while. Etc.
-Actual cheaters coming in from Virginia.

When my DS was a student at Walls, he often got a ride from a family friend who lives just across the line, and who worked two blocks from the school. It was easy, and we lived in DC, but he would be dropped off from a car with Md plates. The horror!

I'm calling shenanigans on this one. Unless you have off street parking, DC parking enforcement will issue a ticket for having an out of states licensee plate within a month or two of moving. I joke about how DC parking enforcement is the only efficient governmental department.

That is hilarious. There are tons more people in DC who will vote against someone threatening to root out address cheaters than those who will consider it a reason to vote for someone. There is no way this will become a major issue in the mayoral campaign.

Anecdotally it seems pretty clear that the pro-cheater constituency outvotes the anti-cheater constituency.

Definitely true. We just moved to DC and went first thing to motor vehicle to get new tags. Our movers didn't come for several days after that and I hadn't been able to find a screwdriver in any box I opened. 13 days after I picked up the new tags I got a ticket for failure to affix new tags....$100 later....

This year I'm taking pictures of suspicious MD plated cars and will share with DCPS investigators and the school principal.

Yeah -- D.C. seems to have a fairly low concentration of citizens who agree that a desire to abide by the law is a good thing. An anthropologist should be encouraged to look into this social phenomenon.

plenty of people keep their car registration in MD or VA, because it saves money. not everywhere has RPPs.

Our street doesn't have sticker parking, but we got a ticket 3 months after our move from MD that we needed to reregister our car. No idea why they patrol the non-sticker streets, but they do!
