Any colleges you wouldn't allow your kid to go to?

UVA - really provincial
Dartmouth - conservative drunken frat boys
Cal Tech - a number of years ago, colleagues who attended grad school there told me that quite a few of their female students had been date raped. I'd want assurances that that had been cleaned up.

Current ambition of child, age 3, is to be truck driver, so this may be moot.

Absolutely agree! My kid is still young, so lots of things might change in the next decade and a half, but not one penny of parental (or grandparental) funding goes to one of those sort of schools. I wouldn't disown him, but I wouldn't pay for it.

I got a large merit scholarship to a flagship (but still middling) state school and went because I needed the money. It was tough being a genius surrounded by idiots, but somehow I managed. I'll be quite happy to be in a position to fight with my kid over greek life, campus location and the like.

I love to volunteer but hate to do it alone. So I did volunteering in college via my greek organization and now through local philanthropic organizations. If you have a like-minded child, please fight your own prejudices and let him or her find a social network that at least makes giving back to society part of the deal.

Or don't. Ridicule it and make fun it with your kids while you all hang out and lament how nobody takes the time to volunteer.

Um. Have any of you looked closely at this site? The #2 safest school is Kaplan University which is an on-line university. Of course they have no crime. They have no campus to speak of. Neither do Capella, ITT Tech, any of the DeVry sites, or many of the community and technical colleges listed in the top 50.

All the Florida hate is hysterical. I graduated from a Florida school, and it was fabulous: sunshine and beaches. The degree also led to a great career.

I love the way some posters are saying they "won't allow" certain schools. You know how I can tell you don't have college kids?

We have one who has graduated, three in college now, one in high school. My four oldest chose very different schools. Because we are the ones paying, of course we had some say in where they decided to go. But the only thing we said was that we would pay the equivalent of in-state tuition. Anything extra would have to be scholarships or other aid. Other that that, we let them make the decision.

These are ADULTS. You need to put aside your own prejudices (Really? No schools anywhere in the South? How stupid do you have to be to come up with something like that) and your own college experiences (The poster who hates Greek life was so obviously shut out of every good sorority) and let your adult children make their own decisions.

No wonder so many of you have kids on medication and in therapy.

I don't get the Florida hate either. There are some excellent colleges in Florida, both public and private. I think many dcum posters lack awareness of much outside their little world.
