OP, a friend of mine is 6'1" and looks like a strapping man. He is handicapped. He walks normally, but he has no feet. Shoes with some kind of device in them, but no feet.

If a non-handicapped stall is available, you should always use it if you can. You have no way of knowing if someone will come into the bathroom a few moments later that needs it. Let me say that again, you should never use a handicap stall if you don't need to and a non-handicapped stall is available. If you don't need it.

Your link is not to any state official pdf handicap parking forms. Here is Virginia's: https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/webdoc/pdf/med10.pdf Here is DC's: http://dmv.dc.gov/sites/default/files/dc/sites/dmv/publication/attachments/medform.pdf

Many states are actively changing their qualifications. You need to go to the official sites to get up to date qualifications.

Here is the link I intended to provide.

But obviously even you can read on that VA form that people with Autism can get one. It is not solely based on your ability to walk 200 feet.

But I do need it. To change my clothes and attend to my 5 year old. Yes, I can do that. Handicap does not mean "no waiting, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever." They can wait the 1 minute that I'll be in there with my kid. Just like I routinely wait to use the restroom.

So they could be perfectly fine going into a restaurant or store and then be hit with an "episode" and it could be excruciating just to get back to their car in the handicapped spot, and near impossible to get back to a sport anywhere else in the parking lot.

So they must not ever go to any big stores, malls, or stadiums/theaters. Cause if they had an "episode" there, they would never get out.

If all other stalls are occupied, yes you can use the handicapped stall. If there is a non-handicapped stall available, use it. You "need" to use the handicapped stall about as much as you "need" another hole in your head. You have the option to use both, someone that needs the handicap stall does not. So they could be waiting when only one stall is in use and 2-3 are empty. If anything, those that need it wait more often than those that do not.

Unlike handicapped parking spot, handicapped stall has no restriction in terms who can use it. If an overweight person prefers using it, he surely can. If a mother needs to help a young child use bathroom and wants some extra space to maneuver, she can use it. If a pregnant woman wants to use it, she should be able to. Whether one uses it or not depends on common sense, not law in this case. Many restrooms put baby changing board in the handicapped stall because if in the rare occasion a wheelchaired person comes in, he/she can wait a little just like others. It is completely different than the handicapped parking lot, without which a handicapped person will encounter great difficulty.

I agree, it's only an honor system. Do what's honorable.

I'll make a deal with you. If I EVER see a person in a wheelchair waiting for the stall when I come out on the rare times I do use one, I'll report back here immediately. Should happen sometime between now and never. It has NEVER happened.

For VA I agree people with Autism may qualify. It is only one of two states that allows it. Which is a rare case and goes against the federal regulations. And even VA's form has "Reason this patient's ability to walk is limited or impaired or creates a safety condition while walking." stated above all the possible check boxes. And again, the only definition given for limited or impaired walking is cannot walk 200 feet. Which makes that definition an implicit one.

You are an honorable lady so I trust that you will.

Handicapped stalls are not like parking spots. How long do you spend in the bathroom, compared to a parking spot? 1-4 min vs multiple hours.

If I am waiting, and a handicapped person comes in, and the next stall open is Handicapped, I let them use it. But, if I go in, and there is no one there, I can use any stall I want. Just like, I can sit in the handicap seating on metro -- until someone who needs it comes in.

So when someone comes into the bathroom that needs the handicap stall, knocks on your door, you would immediately get up and let them have it? Far as time spent on toilet, much depends on the person and if there going #1 or #2. Some will only be a few minutes as you said. Others, especially if they are constipated, could be 15 minutes+.

Are you for real? Where does it say handicapped stalls are to be immediately accessible, 24/7? Do people in wheelchairs never wait?

Yes, I am honorable thank you very much. I have never inconvenienced a single person ever. And you're sort of an ass for implying that I'm not, while you think you're racking up some phantom "honor points" for not using stalls that no one is waiting for and going unused. Good for you. You must be highly evolved. AND honorable!
